Frustrated :(
Posted by tblue41945 on November 29, 2014 at 9:39 amToday my body decided it didn’t feel like poling. I understand that we kind of wake up with a different body every day. You know some days you’re a little stronger, some days you’re not quite as flexible but today I was a hot mess. First I was a little winded after my warm-up (a first), then I got super dizzy after my first spin mode spin and then my strength failed me. I decided to just quit before I hurt myself. I feel fine so I don’t know what the heck is going on. All in all it was extremely frustrating. Does this or has this happened to anyone else?

I can relate totally!! Especially with the dizzy, I think for me it seems like if I go a few days without eating right or my water intake is low. Or if I have just not been listening to my body in General…Anxiety for me is a huge trigger. Which sucks because most the time I can get an awesome release from pole but have had a few occasion where it left me feeling absolutely sideways!! Especially spinny. Also I’ve realized now that I hold me breath a ton unknowingly and i think that can contribute. I’m just now realizing what full breath feels like. agree with the new body everyday thank you for that thought!!

Thanks Shoog. I hadn’t really thought about it but my food intake was off the last couple days. I didn’t eat my usual meals and snacks. This was probably my body’s way of saying “Oh you don’t want to feed me, okay see what you get.”

I’ve found with poling that any drop in my food intake, especially if on the lower end of the carb spectrum that it will bite my butt. Same for water. I always cramp if my water intake isn’t very near to two litres. If my food has been low then I just don’t have as much power and endurance in the lesson, I feel disconnected and not as efficient and/or I come out shaky. Poling is very demanding on your body, it needs good high quality fuel and plenty of liquid. I was coming out of classes starving hungry and attacking the chip shop (Something I just don’t do!). Increasing my carbs without going mad solved this along with ensuring I ate plenty of food that day in the run up to lessons and ate well the day after. It taught me to ensure I support my body through correct feeding so it can pole well. Of course sometimes your appetite does drop (sickness, stress, meds) and I really believe it’s important to ease off a bit when this happens. No harm will come from being gentle and kind to our bodies, being mean and pushing through things could do the opposite though!

I want to second what everyone else is saying. Eating on point makes for better poling, for sure! I deal with a high level of stress and when it gets really bad, I lose my appetite and my diet and water intake suffers. This directly affects my strength. I have learned this the hard way.
Another factor for me is my period. The days leading up to my period I experience limited ability to tolerate spinny. I have been sick with nausea for several days after spinny pole practice (until my period starts) and have gotten to the point where I just cannot do anything on the pole once I hit that wall of nausea. I also experience more muscle pain after exercise during this time. I just do what I can and ride it out during that time. It is very frustrating, but figuring this pattern out has helped me to be more patient with myself.

I fully agree with MissyM about that time of month. I realized that the difference in hormones throughout the month really changes how I feel before, during and after practice. Another thing that I’ve noticed is that it also affects how much I perspire, which really affects my grip, especially during my period.
Good luck and be patient with your body!

Thanks for the responses ladies. Pole is completely different from any other workout I’ve done in the past so I’ll have to be more careful to make sure my water and food intake stays on point.
