So I was looking up tutorials/videos of leg switches, and I noticed two things: firstly, people seem to disagree on the naming of gemini/scorpio. Personally, I know a gemini to be an outside leg hand, and a scorpio an inside leg hang. That's how it was taught to me and all my friends in pole classes, but some people seem to use them the other way round. What do you all call them? 🙂
Secondly, I noticed that while Veena and DirdyBirdy and a couple of others call an outside leg hang a gemini, same as I do, they invert on the opposite side. I invert with the pole on my left, so in a gemini I am hooking my right leg, but I have seen loads of others invert on the other side and hook their left leg. I don't know if they're just left handed or if they do it this way for a reason.
Thoughts, ladies? Which way round do you do things? 🙂

I name them same as you do, and I do everything on both sides. If I notice that one side gets better I do the other side twice as much. So I don’t really have a good or bad side.

I think they are just known by different names. Here in the US they are known the same as you learned them, so I’m not sure where geographically the difference lies. Everyone should learn both sides for moves. Just because its demo’d one way doesn’t mean the other way shouldn’t also be learned.

Names are such a tricky thing because everyone just uses whatever for names. You can always check out our gallery here for names and AKA lists too. AKA's are listed in lesson descriptions as well.

When going into a outside leg hang AKA Gemini you invert on the opposite side so the outside leg is used to hang. Just as you observed.

You should be working on inverts from BOTH sides always! There is not one correct side to be inverting on. 🙂

Yeah I've noticed so many differences in names – the move I was taught as a 'hello boys' everyone else calls a wrist seat, I've seen what I was taught to be a wonderwoman spin called a carousel, a showgirl, a pole hold spin and many others. It can get confusing! 🙂

Right okay, that makes sense I guess, it's probably bad but I haven't really tried inverting on my other side yet. Maybe I'll have to give it a go. I just watched Dirdybirdy's Scorpio tutorial though and she was listing the points of contact as behind RIGHT knee, RIGHT side, back of RIGHT arm. So I wondered if everyone had a preferred side to invert on 🙂

Yeah, names of things can be really tricky, especially when you get into the fact that some studios are barely aware of the online community of pole dancing, and just come up with their own names. I learned what Veena calls a "Back hook spin" as a "Half pint," and then I learned the "half spin" as a "swing dip." It's all very confusing.

Personally, I think the "Outside/Inside leg hook" is a more descriptive and direct name, as it doesn't matter which side of the pole you're inverting on. Many of us have our preferred or stronger sides, but when you get into more and more complex maneuvers, I think that being able to invert on either side without any kind of preference is best.

Personally, I invert on my right, with the pole on my left… but I'm working on inverting on the left, with my pole on my right.
