  • Getting Own Pole, Please Help

So, I have been poling at a studio since July but recently hurt my shoulder because we aren't given the best instruction on form. I started inverting (before I was probably ready) and strained my right rhomboid pretty badly because, as I have discovered, I was not inverting properly. After a hard, painful lesson and reading a lot of forums on here, I've decided I trust Veena's lessons more because of her safety awareness and want to get my own pole to learn at home.

However, I'm really nervous about space and where to put it. Here is a link to a picture of the only space I have found to put it.

Disregard the chandelier, it's nowhere as close as it looks to my dance space. But, anywho, ceiling is 8' tall and area from the wall to wall part is 11' all together. I am just under 5'8. While I feel confident I can do spins, I'm concerned about enough space for RG, climbing and inversions. What do you guys think? Is 8' high enough for inverted tricks? Is a little more than 5ft on either side enough for RG? Also, this is a mobile home, are there any problems with that?

    Feedback is greatly appreciated!!

    Congrats on your first pole!!

As far as ceiling height goes, I don't think it would be a problem.  Of course, 20-ft-tall ceilings would be ideal, but there are still lots of things you can do with a shorter ceiling.

I'm 5'10" and one of the studios I used to go to had 8' ceilings.  If I got on my tippy toes, I could touch the ceiling!  I was still able to do a lot of tricks and spins (including inversions).  The only thing I couldn't really do is climb, which was disapointing.  But you have to make do with what you have!

I actually have a pole that DOES extend, but not the functional part- there's a tube that is the foundational part of the pole that extends to make the pole tall enough to function up to 10feet, but the tube is black and plastic and gross. So, I'm stuck at about 7feet of pole.

I'll tell you this: Totally enough to do inversions, particularly at the beginning! I'm perfectly fine inverting and having my head only a foot off the ground- it gives me a sense of security, like I can get out if I really need to!

Granted, I might need to get a taller one, one day…but for now it's awesome!

Height sounds fine. As for the RG spins, here is my pole situation. My pole is about 4 1/2 ft away from 2 of my walls and my table, but it has A LOT of space in 2 other directions, so when I do RG's I toss my body in the direction where the open space is, then I pull my legs in when my legs get close to the wall or table. You just have to judge. That is the unfortunate thing with having a home pole, you gotta deal with space issues, but you adjust. btw, I am 5'2", so that is why that limited space works for me.

Thanks everyone, I'm feeling pretty confident in my plan now lol Just gotta get the payment details worked out with my deployed hubby and order! I'm ecstatic! My pole can't get here soon enough!!!

Amazon, First, I love you're name 😀 I hear you on the climbing aspect, that was a concern but I was thinking I would just pay for drop in visits at the studio once a month so I could work on things that I want height for.

Runemist, good point about the security of being closer to the ground! Totally makes sense to me :D!

Scimitar, not sure if you checked out my pic but I also have plenty of space in the 2 directions without walls so I will keep that in mind with RG spins! Thank you!

I used to live in a space that was very limited for pole.  If I stood at my pole and extended my leg in any direction, I could touch something with my toe.  I had to move my TV and my living room table in order to practice.  If I did a RG spin, I would have to angle myself that I kick off over the couch and bring my legs in before I came around and hit the wall. Now I live in a house where I have plenty of room around the pole but my ceiling height is only 8'. I am 5'4.''  Doing inversions are fine for the most part. But If I am doing a repel move with legs extended, I have to let myself slide down the pole before I catapillar up again.  There are numerous foot prints and shoe marks all over my ceiling.  It is inconvenient at times, but its the only choice I have.  I think that if you really want to pole, you can work with what you have…  I think most of us have to work in less than ideal spaces. I have seen vid of a girl poling in the kitchen, doing extended butterflys over her stovetop!

Jenn, I think you're right it does sound like there are so many polers with the same space restraints. I am definitely willing to make it work, after my shoulder/back injury and having to stay off of the pole for a few weeks I am feigning to even just have a pole to walk around! lol Glad you are finally in a place where you have more room and thanks for the reassurance about the 8' ceilings.

You should be fine then. Just go for the empty space during take off to avoid any foot smashies. Good luck!

@arryferrarri,you should check out platinum stages, they have the star standalone 3.0 model,it’s a free standing pole with a built-in circular stage,it’s spin/static so it’s like getting 2 poles in one, with a stage,so height or space wouldn’t be a prob since you could place it anywhere really

I actually just had a conversation in a different forum about a stage. It seems the stages can tip with the taller girls???

I have actually seen the PS SSA Stage tip over when a taller dancer was doing a spin.  And I believe the new PS SSA only goes up to 7.5ft unless you want to purchase extra extentions, giving the dancer less height to work with then a removeable pole.

Thanks everyone for the input and info about the Platinum Stages, which I had considered at one point. I hope others get some ideas from this forum post too 😀 But I decided to go with the Chrome XPole XS and ordered on Tuesday.  Now the hard part is waiting! I've been refreshing FedEx tracking every few hours lol What a dork! Too bad it's supposed to get here tuesday and I leave for a wedding in AZ till Sunday! I'm gonna be dreaming about that pole all week!!!

Where can I order a pole from has been my biggest question? And do I have to screw it in my ceiling or something?

Lilmynx is the only one that requires drilling, but they are the pole I recommend personally. X pole and platinum stages have ceiling plates that do not require any drilling.

@MSlyDalton  you can order directly from the companies.  xpoleus.com and platinumstages.com for the removable poles.  i suggest the xpole.  had really good customer service with them.  def cant say the same for platinum stages.  https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif
