I feel like I’ve been to the end of the Internet and back and haven’t found a good solution for this, so here goes…

I wear a 28J bra. The extra surface area comes in handy for holds like the teddy. But the girls seem to get in the way during spins, and I just don’t feel graceful. Is it a matter of owning the shape I’ve got, or is there anything I can do?

Also, finding cute, well-fitting dance wear can be a challenge. Dance should be about the moves, but I see self-expression and feeling fabulous as being part of the equation. When you’re wearing a big tan sports bra with a million hooks under your tank top, you feel frumpy and lumpy, nowhere near graceful.

Before I took up pole, I thought that if well-endowed strippers could look good and find dance wear, I could too. But strippers don’t generally engage in the high-impact moves of pole fitness. I also suspect that if a person has implants, there’s not going to be the same degree of, well, jiggle. Sometimes I think my girls have minds of their own!

Does anyone else have experience with this? I want to feel confident and curvy, not chubby and awkward. Your stories and suggestions are much appreciated. 🙂

I’m a 34 D/DD depending on bra brand, and ill agree with you that “the girls” get in the way sometimes! I grew up in ballet and gymnastics where having a chest is unacceptable, and when I stopped training after high school they just grew out of nowhere! All was great until I discovered pole and got back to dance. Now I have to wear bras under pretty backless leotards (which causes another issue…back rolls!) And none of the cute pole tops tend to fit me (and I go through a roll of double sided tape every performance). Honestly, even though I’m not as secure with my body image as i use to be, you gotta work with what you got! Maybe decorate or bedazzel some of those plainer tops! Or find someone who sews and have some made 🙂 embrace your body, the more you do . The better you will feel 🙂

I like dancing in regular high quality bras. My whole family has very large breasts and found going to specialty shops helps a lot. there are some beautiful bras that come in large cup sizes. you could also have a semestress add more fabric if it is too sheer. Bra specialists also help with selecting the style, material, and construction that best fits your needs. I go to Intimacy (they have locations in major cities) but there are other good bras specialty shops.

I'm in the same boat. You get used to it is the bottom line. Just get creative with the tops. I usually have to put abra under whatever I'm wearing so I make sure the straps can either blend with the top, or be hidden with clips. Lululemon has some cute tops, I heard Mika brought in a Tula top specifically for bustier girls although I'll believe that works fine with no bra when I see it. And I've had luck buying cheerleader costumes too. They needed to be decorated to look less cheerleader-y. I'll post a pic to my profile so you can see (it's a blue sparkly top with black and blue bottoms).

You might have luck with onsies as well. Just get a plain style with side and back cutouts. Those usually have some room for a bra underneath and I find they really keep everything down.

Eventually with dance I think you realize that everyone is jealous of everyone else in a small way or another. I don't mean this as a negative either. One girl will be dying to have another girls hair the way it flips around, and the other girl will be dying to be able to shoulder mount like another girl. So even if you feel awkward and uncomfortable sometimes, someone in the room is watching you wishing they were just like you.

I'm 38DD and the Mika Tula "Curvaceous" top did not work for me by itself. I have to wear it over a regular bra. Granted, on the site it says it only goes up to 36DD, so I knew I was taking a risk when I bought it that it wouldn't fit me. It technically "fit" ok, but offered NO support and exposed a bit more skin than I was comfortable with.

Thank you Pankake! I'd debated maybe trying it out but at a 36E I think I'll have the same result as you.

Also aHA! I knew it!!! haha

Oh Aspygirl, I think I know how you feel (i wear a 30gg if I can get it, but modtly a 32g). I tend to wear Cleo by Panache’s Jude t shirt plunge bra with a cheap crop top (not the sort that has elastic at the bottom) over it for class. For a performance I would probably wear the same bra, either decorated in some way, or under “something”. Hope this helps.

I'm right in this boat, too! The girls can often make me feel more awkward and large than anything else (I wear a 32 I cup). I often wear a sports bra to hold them in, and it makes me look like I've got great pecs too 😛

I think the right top can do everything you want to have happen, but if you have trouble finding the right shirt to fit over your chest… I'd say… find moves that you're comfortable with, and intersperse them in with moves that are a little bit more uncomfortable! That way, you're not feeling quite as frustrated, because it's not constant.

Seriously though? Work your pectorals. They're the ones in your chest, just above the boobies, which connect through your armpit to your upper arm (just above the bicep, sort of). These muscles are hugely responsible for lifting your chest up and keeping it supported, and making sure the girls don't get in the way! I've had great results so far, and I'm really happy 🙂
