Getting up
Posted by tacha666 on January 4, 2013 at 4:41 amHi!
Most of the time I'm doing spin-combos, I end up on the floor, hooked around the pole with one or both legs and then I'm stuck! Is there any way to unwrap and get up smooth and elegant?

Floorwork is a great way to make your transition from a spin to the floor to standing up look good- it also is another way you can improve your flow, and strength.
Otherwise… well, you can always bring your feet together underneath you, and stand up butt-first (this looks especially good from behind 😉 ). You can take one step forward so that you are on one knee, and then try to glide your way up. You could also work on things like turns while on the floor, effectively getting you untangled from the pole and into a good position for standing…
I've also seen people use spins to get up!
Another thing you can do, if you have the space and ability, is try to land with your feet already on the ground, ready to go! Or, just as you are landing, use the momentum from the spin to stand up, still turning around the pole.

Yeah, using spins to get up would be really great! Do you know any videos where I can watch that? I like the way this girl does at 00:40 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cVlaUswaBg
This one definetly is on my To-Learn-List.I sounds so easy when you say bring your feet together underneath you… But for example, when I land from a front or back hook, in my eyes it looks so stupid when I'm doing that! Do you know a video where someone does that looking nice?
Using the momentum from the spin to stand up doesn't work for back hook spins, or am I just too stupid?

If I land a back hook I almost always do a chest down/ass up dive yo the ground and then reposition my legs. I rarely land a front hook. Instead I typically bring my unhooked leg around while I am spinning and end up in a double leg front hook.

Sorry, I cannot view videos while at work. I will look later and comment.

Hi Tacha…I take you it you are learning on your own and don't have a studio to go to?
Are you talking about landing with your legs on either side but still on your feet or coming all the way dow to the floor either kneeling or lying down?
Upmoves from the floor are definitely a challenge to our creativity. I get excited whenever I find new ones.
The best thing to do if you are learning on your own is watch various videos and find new transitions up from the floor. Its difficult to find many these days which do a lot of dancing instead of just aerial tricks though so it will take some work and time. If you get one new move out of a video consider yourself fortunate.

For floorwork these two girls inspire me consistently, webstwe and luckygirl1220. I was lucky enough to train with them before I started my gypsy move around every few years lifestyle. Those are their youtube channel names.

This is a fun way to get up off the floor. Slink up. https://www.studioveena.com/lessons/view/44d25902-b8ee-11df-856f-001b214581be

Mary Ellyn:
Yes, by this time, I'm learning at home. I'll start a workshop next week, but I discovered that I can learn very well at home (usually I practice together with a friend so we'll give feedback to each other which is very good).
I meant landing on my knees… I mostly find it looks awkward… And I don't want to do the same move everytime.
You're so right by saying it's hard to find dancing/floorwork videos. Unfortunatly I'm not able to do all that cool aerial stuff (just started to invert), so I'm pretty much stuck to the ground at this timehttps://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_geek.gifcorbyOconnor: Thanks for these great inspirations! These girls are really nice to watch.
I tried the spinning-get-up yesterday and discovered that I probably need to work on pull-ups for one more week to get it done https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I love Michelle Shimmy!
That is an excellent example of getting up from kneeling whether facing away from the pole like Michelle is or facing forward.
The first thing we teach all of our students is that forward slide, then bending the back knee to unhook it from the pole then do a reverse cat pounce back to your knees, then peel up like Veena shows in the slink up.
Once you slide forward, as shown here, you can transition as she does, reverse cat pounce back like I described, or to any other nummer of transitions. There are many ways to get up from the floor from here but they would take so much time to describe – however they all begin with some way of unhooking that foot.
You've given me an idea though of gathering all the methods I teach for getting up from the floor for my students to review.

If you land on your knees from a back hook you can put your arms in position and straddle (invert v) up. It takes strength but is also great conditioning and will stop you jumping into a straddle when doing it from standing. You mentioned you are just starting to invert but it could be something to work towards

Thanx for sharing this great video, chem! I'll work on that!
Mary Ellyn, if you ever consider making a video of different methods to get up, then please let me know! That would be so helpful!
Melt, that's a great idea as well! I'm having a problem with the V though. I can lift my thighs to the chest, but then I can't go further. I guess my butt is too heavy and my head too light or something… Even when I'm doing the basic invert and then put my knees into the tuck invert position, I turn back to land on my feet! When I extend my legs I stay inverted tough, so there might be a little hope that I figure out how it works sometime https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cool.gif
My greatest problem is definetly coordination. It took me several hours to figure out how to do body rolls, but I it's very seldom that I can't do a move because of missing strength.
In Germany we have a word for people who are just unable to pick up moves and who have a lack of coordinating their limbs. You know, people who turn left in a gymnastics class when everone else turns right. Translated it would be Body-Claus. That's what I am https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_geek.gif -
In my most recent video I get up from my knees twice if your looking for more ideas. 🙂
