I like Charley's idea! The platform would allow the best of both worlds. I'm stuck with an 8' space right now and I'm CRAVING at least 12'  poles. Don't limit yourself if you have the option! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif

I actually prefer carpet! I would def. say tall pole and carpet over hardwood ANY day.

I'm a hardwood girl if given the option. I can't dance in shoes worth a darn on carpet and I love dancing in shoes. Plus I have rug burned myself wayyyyy too many times. I have two poles on carpet and would kill for some hardwood!

Always go for height. It's so much easier to find solutions for flooring issues than for engineering ones! Plus, you can always put packing tape on the bottoms of your heels and trick yourself into thinking you're on hardwood in socks.

Rip up that carpet or add a Harlequin floor over the carpet.  Sure you might lose a few inches but keep the height at all costs.
