So I’ve been poling off and on for 3ish years. About a year ago I was in a car accident and had to take a break. Now I just can’t get back on the pole 🙁 I’ve lost a little strength but nothing significant. Any suggestions for getting back in the game? Has this happened to anyone else? Waaaaah!

I was off the pole for 8 months due to wrist issues and carpal tunnel surgery. When I came back to poling, it was frustrating for me to be working so hard at getting moves I use to could do. One night in class the instructor showed us a move I have never done before. When I did it, it brought back that feeling of accomplishment that I would get with each new move that I would learn. It was definitely a motivator for me. My love for pole is back full force(even if my body is not). Many of us loose our “pole mojo” from time to time. The best thing for me to do when that happens, is to make a list of all the things I liked about pole when I started. Sometimes I get so focused on pushing myself, I forget about just having fun.

    I did!!!
I use to be a hyper dedicated studio dweller for almost 2yrs, then I left and then a year and a half went by before I got my own. So it was a long break between and most of my strength and memory of moves had been completely erased. The first week I found myself extremely upset, heartbroken and angry. I even wrote a blog on here about it actually. But I refused to give up. I didn’t spend $300 to give up on something I loved. So every other day I put on some loud tunes on my Pandora and just wing it. One day I freestyled with my 7yr old daughter and had a blast. Another time I got a little buzzed and put on a show for my hubby. Each time “finding myself” more and more & regaining that confidence (& strength). Sometimes I look for something on Veena to try out, other times i’m just twirling the same 8 spins I remember. Sure, I still miss who I was when I was at my best back then, but I tell myself to be patient. It will all come back, maybe even 200% better than I was. I have nothing to prove now. I have no race to be the next level. So why rush?
Advice? Maybe start at the beginning and refine all the old moves. Feel a new sense of accomplishment, even if its like combining 2 spins you never thought to try before. That’s what I do. GOOD LUCK!

Yes, I had 3 major surgeries between 2012 and last year. It was supposed to be one surgery but I had numerous complications. I ended up on crutches for a year and a half and I still use a cane some days.
I went from being 55kg doing crossfit 3-4 times a week to 65+kg and being completely and utterly sedentary, with so much weight around my belly, no stamina, no strength, nothing.
It has been incredibly hard for me to get back into pole work because I feel so down about how weak and out of shape I am.
but I find if I just put some music on and dance for a while my mood lifts and, even if I can’t do the moves I used to do (ie drop splits), I am seeing my strength improve almost daily.
I can climb the pole now many times over where as when I first got my pole last month I couldn’t even do one climb.
I know how frustrating and overwhelming it can be but you’ll be amazed at how the body remembers, but it will take time.
    Em x

Thanks ladies! Some really good ideas. It got me off my butt last night and I worked on strength training pole moves, a couple climbs, and some caterpillars. I’m going to keep stalking SV and get some more inspiration. -xoxoxo

Revisiting already learned moves works for me too…u find little subtle variations. Good on you for getting yourself motivated! I did one of veenas strength training warm up routines (i think it takes 20 mins?) Anyhow ive been hitting an abreviated version of that…and even being able to ons more crunch up or squat feels good. I love that adrenaline kick from exercise. Rest of the time its just floating in pretty shapes hehe
