what do I work on in order to get a handstand lift and a elbowstand deadlift? do I just get in the position and keep trying to lift with my legs in a v? I can get in an elbowstand and almost lift up with my legs straddle. I still have to push up just a little bit with my toes. do I just keep working on that? handstands, I have to sweep one leg up. At this point, I don’t care about being able to do these freestanding. For right now, I would just like to be able to deadlift against the pole. Thanks!

Oooohhh…VERY good questions that I would also like to know the answers to.

From my time as a gymnast more than 20yrs ago, we used to just practice, practice, practice until we got it. But my time as a gymnast was long before gymnasts incorporated weight training into the mix.

In the handstand, make sure that your hands are not to close to the pole because you need some space for your back to make the lift easier. A wide flexy straddle always helps since it’s about getting as much weight over “to the right side” as possible. If you start with hands and feet in correct positions but the back still a bit away from the pole, you can lean forward and use that little momentum to help you lift the legs. If that later starts to feel easy, you can do the complete dead lift (starting with the back already in contact with the pole). Remember, it helps to press the head into the pole when lifting, not just the back!

The elbow version of this is actually being discussed in https://www.studioveena.com/forums/view/Elbow_Stand_20140228024209
with some video examples as well.

It is maybe more difficult to get this one because of less space between the back and the pole.

It helped me to start a little bit far away from the pole to press the elbowstand. As in the handstand deadlift this gives you a little momentum to lift the legs. It is kind of cheating, I know, but I think it is ok for the beginning 😉
