I was curious to know if any other people have had injuries to their hands/fingers due to pole dance, or if it is a very common problem. I ask because I've been doing pole just under a month now, and the other day when I was playing cello (my other passion) I felt this snapping sensation in my wrist and palm of hand (also a very sharp pain). Since then, I've been to the chiropractor several times and my hand no longer hurts at all except for my third finger on that hand (and I only feel pain in the finger when I play in a certain position in cello). I was warming up before I did pole dance, but now am not sure if the injury was caused by doing pole, or if it is just a freak occurance and pole had nothing to do with it. . . I am very sad now because many of my friends and family are saying it may have been pole and I am worried I may have to give it up if I want to continue with playing music. Any information or support would be greatly appreciated, I really am at a low right now because of not doing pole dance 🙁

Without knowing more about the injury and not being a doctor, I can't say for sure, but I would think it's just because you're so new to poling.  Your hands are just not used to the new demands you have made of them, the good news is that they will get stronger the more you practice, just like that cello playing you love. 🙂  I'd wager when you started playing cello you couldn't play for long without your hands hurting, but with time and practice your fingers gained strength and now you can probably play much longer.  Pole is no different.  Don't give it up so soon, take some rest time away from the pole to heal up and hopefully you'll be stronger than before when you give it another go.

Are you putting weight on your wrists in spins? When you are spinning, your bottom hand is a support but it is NOT your main support. You should be pulling with the top hand as well as pushing with the bottom hand. Any move, if done incorrectly can cause slight injury. I had angered my wrists when I first started. Just lay off them for a few weeks and when you do pole, make sure to focus on form. If you feel any pressure in the wrists, then stop and readjust. Also, if you are death gripping the pole because your grip strength is not strong enough yet, that may be part of the problem. I have good grip, and my fingers hurt right now bc I am learning aerial silks and I am using the death grip unknowingly.

Monitor your body for a week, if it does not improv see a doctor.

Dustbunny, thanks for the info and encouragement. I am now determined to take a long break but go back to pole (carefully) as soon as my hand heals. I really am not even sure that my injury was related to pole as it may have been an overuse injury from cello. . .so I will keep my hopes up.

Sensualscimitar, I may have been putting too much weight on my top hand/wrist in spins but then I gradually became more aware of using other parts of my body for support (such as legs in pole climbs). So I'm not sure what caused this, but thank you for your reply~ when I very first started pole, I was using the "death grip" without really realizing it, but now am becoming more careful.
