Handgrips of cartwheel mounts
Posted by joni1 on September 27, 2009 at 11:05 pmSo, I’m starting to attempt cartwheel mounts into straight edge and have been studing alot of vids. I noticed Redken71 teaches the cartwheel mount with a baseball grip with her upper hand in her tutorial But i also see alot of polers use twisted grip with the upper hand. What is the difference in the grip in reference to a better hold, safety and easibility https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif What grip did you guys learn the cartwheel mount with https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif Thanks, Joni

Hey mate, i learnt first off with the baseball grip then went on to the twisted grip the twisted grip feels odd but it seems more secure i still perfure the baseball grip though as its easier to do more out of it.
hope that helps. -
There are a few different kinds of handspring:
– (back-kick) handspring or cartwheel mount: upper hand with the thumb up (baseball-like), lower hand with the thumb down. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLMyrylJ4_g&feature=channel_page and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTxwC6v14Pg&feature=channel_page
– forward/front handspring: same hand-positioning as the cartwheel mount, but mounted not by kicking back, but by kicking forward/upward. Example: 1:33 in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_whEbk6VWjE and
– half handspring: basically the forward mounted handspring, but you hook the front foot and push out to (extended) butterfly. Example: 0:57 in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uO5UkbAtLo&feature=channel_page
– true grip or overhand grip handspring: the top hand is twisted once, hence the thumb is down. Example: 0:56 in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_whEbk6VWjE
– twisted grip handspring: the upper hand has the thumb up, but the wrist is twisted around. Example: 1:26 in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEuqskTdlKsAt least that’s all the handsprings I know of! If anyone has additions, I’d love to know, ’cause I’m very into handsprings at the moment. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif
I’m working on a handspring vid that includes all these handsprings (or attempts thereof) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif .
I think where you start your handspring journey is very personal. I would not start with true grip and twisted grips though. Be by all means very careful with twisted grip; many injuries are caused by that move. Personally I started with half handspring and then cartwheel mount.
So long story short, the twisted grip is an entirely different move. Definitely go with the ‘baseball grip’ upper hand!
Best of luck! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Oooooh, yeah, totally forgot about that one!! That’s so awesome!
Unfortunately I’m not ready yet for elbow grip. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gifSo much to learn https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
Ow, btw, the second one looked more like a flag mount to me. You know, like you do to get into brass monkey, but obviously with a back arch instead of hooking the inside leg..
I’ve watched it over and over, can’t wait to try that!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif -
Next stop one-handed handspring!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif
..hmm do you think it’s possible!?PS: please dont anybody injure themselves trying to prove that it is! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif

Thanks guys for all the great help, vids and advice. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_razz.gif As I embark on my cartwheel mount journey, I know I have you girls as my backbone for support. Since I am comfortable and efficient in my front half handspring into extended butterfly, I think I will start there to try and flick both legs up using the baseball grip on my upper dominant hand. When I’m successful with that, I will attempt kick back cartwheel mount. I really want to get into a straight edge from any flick up mount. This is my ultimate challenging goal. I will finally consider my self a great poler if I accomplish this. I fell in love with poling the first time I ever saw someone pole dancing at a club doing this move. It has taken me 2 years to actually get to the point of even thinking I could actually do this. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif I got the superman and the superman fall in 3 days which gave me the confidence to think that I may be able to get the cartwheel into straight edge. THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif Wish me luck but please don’t say break a leg. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif

Hi everyone. So ,I finally got the cartwheel mount which was my ultimate pole goal. 2 1/2 YEARS AGO WHEN i first saw this move , my jaw dropped. I NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS BACK THEN THOUGHT THAT I WOULD BE DOING THIS ONE DAY. So 3 weeks ago I started practicing this split grip baseball hold, kicking my inner leg forward then back. I was so frustrated https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif as my outside leg kept dragging my legs back down ,but I kept at it. The 2nd week I managed to hook my inner leg and just practicing to balance in the straight edge. The 3rd week I GOT IT. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif I was in shock https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif I dropped down on my knees and cried for joy. I’M STILL IN SHOCK. Last sat night at a dance club with poles, I attempted this move up on stage and got it with the first kick and held my straight edge for 10 sec. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif All my friend’s jaws dropped and the crowed roared. It was my proudest moment. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_queen.gif I”m going to vid tape it and post soon. Thanks to all for the great advice and good wishes. Now I’m off to learn the front handspring mount. Any advice https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif Joni

Hi Sassafrassle, What really helped me was putting all energy and power into that inner leg forward kick to give me enough momentum to get that leg kicked back and straight up,then the outside leg finally followed. Once both legs are up, look up at your feet and contract your abdomen and legs. This help me so much with balancing. And concentrate on making sure your bottom hand is straight pushing you away and top hand slightly bent pulling you into the pole and really lowering your head. Landmark your body position by top arm elbow to hip/pelvic bone. Try hooking your inner leg first and practice balancing into the straight edge.
I had left Trena a comment on a vid she did with a beautiful cartwheel mount that I was so jealous of her cartwheel mount. She replied ”Don’t worry joni, You’ll get it”. So from one determined great poler to the next, Don’t worry Sassafrassle, You’ll get it. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif I wouldn’t be a bit surprise if you post a vid of yourself doing the CM soon. I just posted my CM and ayasha vid last night.
