I've been trying these forever and cannot get them! I think I am confused on the different grips, as the twist grip does not feel "right" for my shoulder. Any help??

I don't recommend the Twisted grip anyway. It works for some, but if it's not used with caution, you can really hurt yourself. The method for doing a handspring with a Twisted grip is not the same as the regular Handspring anyway. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Here are the Grips for The Handspring and Cartwheel…Handspring your kicking the feet forward and up Head goes back…the Cartwheel your Kicking behind and up head moves forward.

This video shows the FULL cartwheel @ 28 secs, Cartwheel @ 44 secs and Handsping @ 1 min…… In that order. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sag8kwfYBmU&list=UUup79MtZnWP_SCAHeVlmzdQ&index=7&feature=plcp

I’m with Veena on the twisted grip thing. Twisted grip should be a lift, and not so much a handspring. Kicking like a handspring with a twisted shoulder can mean injury to the rotator cuff.

The regular handspring is usually with a split grip. You can try the half handspring first, where you catch the pole with your foot and push yourself up into butterfly. I cover the cartwheel mount and handspring in a mini tutorial video on youtube. I’d link it but I’m on my phone. My channel is frizzy508. Look for the video entitled “Advanced Pole Spins & Tricks”. Good luck! Post a video if you can. You’ll get tons of good advice that way. 🙂

Any tips for the split grip handspring? I can do a split grip cartwheel, a TG and true grip handspring, and a half split grip handspring, but the full split grip handspring just evades me 🙁

A lot of people's hands are difficult to turn that way too. But TG is my favorite way:) Just make sure u r strong enough. I see a lot of people who are new into using these muscles and they hurt their shoulders b/c of it. Work on lifts from the ground, right side up first, pushing your bottom arm down, thumbs down-split grip on both sides to work up your strength. Do this for months. This move took me 5 months of hard work(I am talking daily) after 4 years of pole to master. Have now been doing it for 6 but I still know that this is a tough move and you need direction so you don't get hurt.

Okay random question. I tried the handsping (and cartwheel) this morning and this is where I am struggling… you know when you watch videos and everyone kicks up from beside the pole but when they finish off they have almost turned so that they have a leg on either side of the pole (almost in a v) that is where i struggle. I end up vertical beside the pole (not for long, but that's where i go). Any help?

You can hold there to gain strength first or tuck into a ball. Soon you'll nuild up strength to have that "v". For that your body needs a triangle w/ the pole-your hips need to come out. I can do it via chat if I can somehow enable my webcam!

When you turn to face the pole, look up at your feet. Your feet will be facing the pole. Hold it as long as you can! Many people find it easier to do a v than a straight let stand in a handspring. If this is the non twisted variety. Used the top arm to pull you in and your butt tucked and not pushed out. When you do v your legs, your bottom arm is over head, body facing the pole, and voila, you have your kicked leg on the other side of the pole–in a straddle/split grip aysha! Congratulations for coming this far!!! That is half the battle, I think 😉

Bumping this because I am now finally able to at least kick up smoothly and float my top foot onto the pole for a butterfly. Yay! But how do I work on the next steps ( tucking into a ball and working towards a V?) I don't know that I have been able to activate my abs enough to hold the damn pose…
