Hi Brierley, I’m in the UK too! Do you mind telling roughly where you are? I’m in the Channel Islands. Welcome to SV and Happy Poling! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Hi Brierley, I am across the pond also:) I live in Cambridgeshire and I want to welcome you to the world of poling. I love it and have been poling for 6 months. I look forward to hearing about your progress https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

    Hi all,

    Thanks for the welcome https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I am living in East Berkshire at the moment but am going to classes in Buckinghamshire because they’re closer than any others I could find. I have been researching poles today – are the xpoles really the best? Ideally I would like a pole that I can transport in the car (my boyfriend is very keen to see what I’ve been learning, lol but it’s a long distance relationship so I usually end up travelling to his place!). I’m a bit wary of buying a pole from ebay – do you have poles at home or do people manage with only practising once a week?

    Hi Brierly!

I’m from Dublin, so not too far from you either. I have been poling for about a month, when I bought an xpole. Would definitely recommend you getting one. And if you do, buy it here http://www.x-pole.co.uk/

That’s the official website. They have tem for sale on ebay too, but if theyre real, they cost the same! If they cost less, it usually means they’re fake. Also, the poles out now are new ones which are easier to put up than the old ones. I have a 50mm chrome and I love it https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I’d say a lot of people started off just poling once a week at classes. I never went to classes, so I don’t know what it’s like. If you’re unsure about it, you could take a few more classes. But, if you know you’re hooked, then why not get one? (I’d check your ceilings at home are suitable first though, mine nearly werent!)

    Welcome!

I only had one class per week for the first six months of learning (took that long to save up the money and decide it was really something I wanted to stick with) and now I have one at home. I might have improved faster had I had one at home but then again I might not cause I might not have practiced as much as I should. Either way works really. But I agree with Audball, check your ceilings first.

My ceilings should be fine – I know where the joists are, though I’m a bit confused by the instructions on the x-pole website which say put up the pole between joists. Surely it should be in line with a joist, not just onto the plasterboard?? Is that a typo on their site?

Why are there different sizes (45mm vs. 50mm)? How do you decide which one to get? Is it worth paying the extra for the special coating for good grip or is that really for advanced users?

For the joists I think in the UK you should have them between because then you get the support of 2 joists vs one, however in the states they are too far apart so you have to center it on one.

Size difference is purely preference. If you are going to be at a studio some people find the like their poles to be the same size as their studio’s pole’s (often 50) but others find they have better grip with 45. It is a personal preference. Same with the coating, although if you have real grip issues you may want the grippier one. I have chrome and on some days I wish I had more grip because the environmental factors are screwing up mine but othertimes it is just fine with me.

Hello…and welcome!! If your new to pole dance I recommend the Chrome 45mm X pole, unless you plan on only using spin mode only…..then I would get the more grippy Titanium Gold, I feel TG is too grippy for static spins which is what most beginner/intermediates like to work on. I have both finishes and love them both I like my TG for tricks and Chrome for spins. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

I put my pole centred on one joist as my ceilings are odd, and we could only confidently identify one. I invested in a joist finder, which doesn’t work on plasterboard, which my ceiling are, and the knocking method doesn’t work on it either. So i’d say if you joist are close enough, go between, but if theyre further apart, it’s probably okay to go on just one https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_porc.gif

Hello I am in the UK too over in Norfolk https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif started poling nearly two years ago but am not able to get to lessons or even pole regularly at the mo, boooo.

I have a 50mm x-pole but wish I’d got a 45mm as I have small hands and can’t help but feel it would have been a better choice but too late now! lol
