I live in a rented house, in my parents house my xpert went up beautifully leaving no marks at all. I try to install it in the rented house and as we tightened the pole we heard some cracking so we took it down straight away, under the dome there were 3 small cracked circles, it looks like just paint that has cracked. We were careful to find a ceiling joist, it was in line with a light and it was one of the only places in the room that a pin was hard to push into the ceiling.
What did I do wrong? Is there any way I can install it without causing damage?

The exact same thing has happened to me… My dad says it’s okay it’s just that the ceiling has separated from the joist?

I hope that’s all it is. I have decided that it’s probably best just to try it this year and re paint the ceiling at the end of my rent time. Hope I can do a convincing paint cover up 😉
Thank you for replying, it’s really reassuring to know it isn’t just me lol.

If you check out threads like this:

Some people have added plywood when putting up their poles. Now in most cases, it seems to be for balance and preventing slipping, but I think that could also help to prevent damage.

I don’t have the space for plywood :/ there is a weird box suspended from one corner of the ceiling and a light so there is no space. Thank you for the suggestion though. Somebody from my uni society just suggested using a piece of carpet to protect the ceiling instead.

i think what the previous poster meant was a piece of plywood cut to size…a square that your dome piece just barely fits in would be perfect and provide support and distribute the pressure…the carpet will only protect against superficial scratches and make a likely slipping point for your pole to lose pressure…the circle shapes of your cracks are probably nail or screw pops

Yes, uvagirl, that’s what I meant. Personally I haven’t needed to try the plywood tricks but many people seem to think it works for them.

Thank you very much 🙂 I won’t use the carpet then, don’t want to slip. I got the site manager in to have a look and he said it’s just that the paint is old and it was on the joist, so he gave me the go ahead to put it up properly and he said he would just repaint the ceiling.

If it’s any reassurance, I’ve lived in several old houses and in each of them when I put the pole up I heard cracking sounds and ultimately wound up with some small cracks in the ceiling that were not structural at all, just surface cracks as you mentioned. I think particularly if you live in an older building things can shift and settle when you put the pole under tension and it makes those little cracks but doesn’t damage the structure of the house at all as long as you aren’t over-tensioning.
