I can't quite work out what I want to say so this is probably going to sound completely gibberish so sorry in advance!

Firstly 'hi', I'm Kerry, a mum of three from England. I got an X Pole for Christmas which my partner has just installed for me 🙂

I wanted a pole partly because my mission for 2011 is to finally get a good figure after years of my diet starting the next Monday, and also because I', hoping that it will improve my body confidence.

I have had one evening of trying the pole, I looked on youtube and tried to learn the fireman spin (so much for it being easy it took me ages lol!), and my upper body has ached since! Obviously I need to get into shape more than I thought! I now have flu so I probably won't do anymore pole work 'til Monday, but I'd like to know basically, where should I start? I am a complete beginner with no dance background and no flexibility! I'd rate my upper body strength as above average but that is my only plus point! I am thinking about getting the lessons from this site, have any other beginners done the same and would you recommend them? Also, how often should I pole and for how long?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance for the answers 🙂

    Hi Kerry 🙂

    Hello from Toronto!

Hope you're having a lovely day or night seeing as you're in England.

I'm a newbie to this lovely community too! But have been taking Pole classes for a few months now.

Just trying to think of the best way to start. You def. picked the right spin as i'm positive that is the first one they taught us in class. Once you have one spin down, I think you'll find it much much easier to follow up with any other beginner spins ( I believe the 2nd spin we learned was the "ballerina") and the fireman will teach you how to grip the pole 😉

Prior to any spinning, it's pretty important to warm up though 😉 Dance around a little bit, loosen up your hips. Any stretches that you would do to warm up for a sport would do the trick (hamstring / glute / tricep / biceps / back stretches).

I've just signed up for 30 days on Studioveena and the videos that are available would be really helpful to a beginer as it gives a bit of direction 😉

    Hope this helps a bit!

    Cheers!

HI welcome! I hope your feeling better!!  I have my lessons set up in order and they are perfect for new dancers.  The Veena method allows you to build strength first and I also include your Points of Contact with the pole and Muscles used. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Hallooo! Fellow Englander here https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I got on my pole for the first time I just did basic holds and sits (got stomach issues so I can't really do much actual movement for now =[ ) and my chest/arms/shoulders feel like they're disintegrating!! You and me both with the getting back into shape, lol. I'm subscribed to the SV lessons – I think they're set out really well. Basically Veena will demonstrate a move, replay it in slow mo, tell you where you should be touching the pole, replay it again, tell you what not to do and how to correct any mistakes, give you some ways to make it easier, go over it again, then give you some variations sometimes… brilliant for people such as myself who need everything broken down into little pieces! Definitely go for them, they're  nicely priced too https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif there was another link I was using to look up moves I was particularly interested in as well, which I can't remember now… d'oh  either way, good luck with your poling! 😀
