Hi from Jersey!
Posted by Mistysmith on October 30, 2010 at 3:45 pmI just started teaching myself pole dancing from the vids on youtube. (I feel kinda weird and embarased going to classes with other ladies) I have all the basic beginner moves down but when I try to do upside down moves or spin moves I get so dizzy that I have to stop and its keeping me from moving on. Is it my age (37) or do I just need to get used to it? Any advice? Thanks!

Part is due to age and part is due to getting used to it. I started pole dancing at 38 and I know for a fact that spinny stuff really started effecting me in my mid 30’s. Even swinging on a swing gets me sometimes now. I have made myself quite dizzy on more than one occasion while spinning but it does not bother me any more. Spin mode is something else but I am getting better with that even. Pantera showed us something in her workshop and even though it sounds silly it has worked for me. When you are feeling dizzy, flatten your hand and then place your index finger on the bridge of your nose between your eyes. When you do this your right eye cannot see to the left and your left cannot see to the right. Funky but it works.

Oh, I’ve not begun to tackle the inverts…too weak, but you’ll find some wonderful advice from the ladies here on Veena…
Welcome!

I should also add that you should not feel weird or embarrassed to take class with other women. I think if you stepped into a studio you would find it warm and inviting. Pole people are some of the best people in the world! It is a totally different mind set!

When first starting inverts, I also became dizzy. It was my breathing or lack there of https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Afterseveral practices I had a system deep breath while preparing, exhale while lifting, and inhaling as soon as my legs wrapped the pole. After a month of trying to invert without breathing it took another month to do it with. Many of us have been concentrating so hard we forgot to breathe and when we get off the pole our faces look like dizzy tomatoes and plums!
I also agree with Chemgoddess going to a studio is great and only scary till you get there. Everyone is helpful from beginner to advanced because everyone is going or has gone through what you are. It is really motivating to pole with other people -
Hi and welcome! Its totally normal to feel shy about dancing in a studio setting and getting dizzy when inverting. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif Doing moves from the floor against your pole or the wall, like elbowstands, reverse handstands and handstands, can be helpful. Give your body some time to adjust to the new tasks your asking it to do.
Don’t forget, if you have a pole at home you can take the online lessons here. I have designed them to take you though the correct progression to build strength for pole dancing. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
