Hiya got another question for you all (seems like iv been posting loads these past few days) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif Theres another move im trying to master but cant quite seem to get yet and its the hip hold (i think thats what you call it) Iv seen people do it from a scorpio or gemini were you have both hands off the pole, then take both legs off and kinda have em in a V shape over your head. The only thing keeping you on as far as i can make out is your armpit and hip/side skin. Iv tryed this a few times from scorpio and keep falling (i can do no handed scorpio fine so i dont think its my armpit grip) Any tips on how to do this? Iv also seen people get into what i think is called a pole splits??? kinda like the hiphold except one leg is pretty much straight over your sholder and the other out straight on the other side of the pole. Again theres no hands but i cant work out were the grip is coming from or if i could even attempt this! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif But i think both these move look really impressive and wanna give em a go. Hope this makes sense lol https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

The grip is really quite different on these two moves and the one with the inverted splits (often called the "Jade") takes a fair amount of instruction with various factors to consider.

The inverted hip hold (with legs in V) you should seriously try doing it in a g-string once. A lot of the grip is more inside the thigh closer to the groin area.

Start out with the legs closed and together – then slowly try to spread them out.

Do it close to the floor at first and as always..use a crash mat and spotter.

Hi Amber – hip hold is tricky for me, too! Empyrean’s tip on doing it first with legs together and then moving them apart is a good one. I can’t do it yet just using my hip, and this one is one of the most painful moves I’ve worked on yet. It will get better, but in the meantime it sucks! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif

The split thing you are talking about (I think) is the jade split. The only thing really holding you up is the pressure from the hip hold part of the move – it looks so cool, doesn’t it? One day…. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

You will have bruises in not so pretty places learning the hip hold. And yeah, it is a quite sensitive area…..

As for the jade, one of the Jamilla videos explains it really well.

When I was first learning the hip hold, I learnt it with my hands actually holding onto my legs (as is done in the jade split), which helps you get used to the feeling of squidging the pole in the right place. So I inverted, only hooked my first leg round while still holding onto the pole, lowered the other leg down towards my face and grabbed on round the back of that leg to create the grip. Once that was steady enough, then I’d lower the other leg and grab round that and pretty bingo, look mom no hands (on the pole). From there, I progressed to gripping my first leg with both hands (ie one leg was still free) and then one day I was like "Hey, I wonder what would happen if I just didn’t hold on with my hands" so put my hands out so there was a bit of grip under my inside arm too(ie. arms going opposite way to legs) and so my journey to the hip hold was complete:) I don’t know if this is how anyone else works up to it but it worked a treat for me::)

I’ve been working to improve my hip hold so I may not be the best at giving advise but when I do it, it is a lot of groin AND side. You know how much side you use to keep you on when you do a scorpio? That’s pretty much how much I am using when I do the hip hold. If anyone disagrees, please say so ’cause like I said, I’m still working on making mine better.
