Hoochie Coochie dancers
Posted by Firefly studio on May 19, 2012 at 6:08 pmDoes anyone know how it is with "hoochie coochie dancers"? Are they part of history of pole dancing? I am seeking professional text or link, which describes the work of these ladies. Do you have any information?

BTW I would also like to see someone explain why the girls who dance striptease, says exotic dancers..
I am still writing my bachelor thesis which advocate pole dance as a sports discipline. I am looking for information so I could show the difference..

I think that it’s great you’re writing this. But, what do you mean by “hoochie coochie dancers”?? For me when I hear “hoochie coochie” I think of skanky drunk chicks in barely-there clothing obscenely dancing in public to get attention… Do you mean strippers/nude dancers? Club dancers in general? If your wondering why exotic dancers do what they do, I would definitely take a trip to the local strip club and find out. There’s even people here on SV that will give you some insight (myself included). There are many club dancers that do all the crazy tricks and put on a performance night after night, but the majority don’t. Many of competitive polers worked in gentlemens clubs as some point, so I do think that there’s some influence in the history of the sport, in addition to other aerial arts.

@pinsforkids – here is an article on hoochie coochie dancers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoochie_coochie .
Taken at face value in modern vernacular it can be a bit confusing but its actually a intersting historical phenomenon.

As far as I know historically traveling carnivals would have hoochie coochie dancers as part of a stage show for paying customers, girls would dance on stage and strip off. It’s thought that the girls would sometimes use/dance around the tent poles of the carnival as part of their act which some argue this is where the origins of the sexual pole dance started.

Here's a post from a research blog. It contains citations from primary sources at the end. I think it also answers your question about the term "exotic" dancers. HIstorically, the women who performed these dances were from (or advertised as from) exotic locations, such as the middle east, India or Romania (gypsies). While audiences enjoyed being titillated, no one wanted to think that "good" European descended American women would do such things.
