  • How Often Can I Pole?

Posted by MommaBear on May 4, 2010 at 12:09 pm

Since my recent over-poling seems to have resulted in some swollen knuckles and finger joints, as well as a sore elbow, I am beginning to realize that you can definitely, and easily, over-do it.

I saw Veena’s post under New 2 Pole about how often you should pole, but figured it only applied to beginning polers (which I am, and should have listened https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif ).

Then I saw another post about workout regimes and I notice that even you experienced girls don’t pole everyday.

So, I guess I am just trying to think out loud here:

    Beginners – definitely not everyday
    Advanced/Experts – still not everyday?

I’m a bit bummed because I thought that as I became better and had more muscle control and all that good stuff, that I could pole everyday, and that seems to not be the case.

I have been using my time off to just work on stretching and floor work and stuff along those lines, but, OH MY, it is SOOO tempting because some kind of move or pose will jump in my mind and I want to do it SOOO bad. I had to take my pole away for stretching because even though it gives me a wonderful resistance to stretch from – it is just too tempting to stay off of. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

Welcome to the addiction. Follow the rules of bodybuilders….at least 48 hours of rest between muscle groups. On the in between days if you need to pole then work on transitions and just moving around the pole. It is not all about tricks…you need a way to string them all together. If you are working on spins you can do right side one day and left side the next.

I personally get way too sore to be able to pole every day and I found out the hard way that fatigued muscles and pole do not mix well!

I do some sort of pole work 6 days/week….BUT, as chemgoddess said, I rest muscle groups in between. Of those 6 days, only 2 or 3 are devoted to hard-core poling and working on new tricks. The others are devoted to transitions and trying to get my flow down and fine-tuning my style (which needs a lot of work, but that’s why I’m working on it, lol).

Three days/week I am also working with a personal trainer, so those days are my "transition/dance" days on pole.

ok so good Q. how bad is it if i pole days in a row as long as i am not sore? like can i do some pole inverts ect today and tommorow and the next day if i am only doing like 30mins at a time and not sore/tender/fatigued? or is it a pretty hard rule not to work the same muscles days in a row even if not sore? sometimes i am feeling it and want to pole every day other times maybe 1 or 2x week..

Yup, I’m hooked. My husband has compared my attraction to the pole to the likes of a squirrel on crack https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

It is all starting to make sense now – the swollen knuckles and sore finger joints are probably because I am not targeting and using muscles at this point – I am relying on hanging on for dear life to get me through a work out. That alone is helping me make the revelation that I need to really concentrate and focus on effective muscle use as well.

I like the idea of alternating right and left! I think that will really help focus what I am working on instead of just playing around for hours. Also, since I am not very keen to what muscles I am actually using, that is like the "Poleing for Dummies" version for the correct alternation of the muscle groups. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Can’t screw up if your only option is left or right https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I think listening to my body is key – the rest of my body and muscles are game, but with sore fingers influencing my ability to hold, it isn’t going to work.

Thanks for the feedback, sometimes it just helps to "put it on paper" and then it begins to make sense.

Your body needs a chance to rest and rebuild muscles. Over time the over use will lead to injury and possibly a life time of issues. It has been over 2 years since I first injured my shoulder and it still acts up. Some may not show up until later in life. I am 41 and had knee issues starting in my late 20’s. After several exams and MRI’s it was determined that all of the roller skating that I did when I was younger was the cause of my problem.

I suggest reading up on repetitive motion injuries. It really is not worth it!

Even Advanced dancers are looking for trouble if they pole everyday at the same intensity. Pole is such a full body work out that you really need to give your body the time to repair. If you don’t your looking at overuse injuries and burnout. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_pale.gif If I worked on pole tricks the day before and I have time for a work out the next day….I will work on floorworks, stretching, yoga, hooping, but at a low intensity.

ok ok..lol i love the pole so much it is hard to stay off when i an realllly feeling it, but you are so right that is not worth the risk of injury later down the line. good idea veena about the stretching floorwork hooping .. atleast i can still use the pole to do side stretches, walks, floor moves. ok guys thanks for setting me straight ! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif
