How can I start dancing professionally @ clubs/events??
Hi there! My name's Katy and I currently live in Tucson, AZ. First off, I have almost 0 experience in dancing as a profession…but any chance I get, I'm always dancing. I've been told numerous times I'm a great dancer, and I definitely have the body for it. My only concern and, I guess, only thing holding me back is I don't even know where to start if I want to dance professionally. My big dream is to someday dance for certain DJs and even work at huge festivals like Electric Daisy Carnival, Electric Forest, etc.
Any information on where to get started would be very helpful. And a side note, I'm definitely not comfortable dancing naked. Closest thing to being naked I could do is string bikinis. That's it. So please don't advise starting at a strip club cause that would definitely not be an option.

What style of dancing are you looking to do?

Definitely go go style. That's pretty much the only style I know how to do.

My advice would be to not limit yourself to ONE style of dance. To be marketable, you should learn or at least familiarize yourself with as many different dance styles as possible. There is so much out there!
For instance, I have experience with:
Pole
Hoop (including one hoop, twin hoops, mini twins, fire hoop) & poi
Bellydance
Burlesque
Ballroom
….the more genres you learn/expose yourself to (even if you don't become proficient) the more well-rounded you'll be.
A lot of getting gigs is just putting yourself out there. I have gotten my gigs this way, by performing in public and by word of mouth. Finding a group of dancers and networking with them will probably be key, too.

Ah okay! Well I will definitely look into those for sure. I doubt I could work up the nerve to work with fire but maybe one day! haha

LOL. Well, it can be anything, this is just what I have experience with so far (I forgot to add lyra! I hope to learn that better this year, as well as silks. 🙂
Good luck, I love how there are so many options and how the genres cross. I have done 2 hoop gigs with a local burlesque troupe. I met the burlesque performer, who invited me to perform in their shows, via a mutual friend who knew we both poled. If not for the pole connection, I never would have gotten connected with the burlesque troupe!

First thing I would do is buy your own portable pole…probably a stage pole so that you do not have to rely on the venue. Next, start getting involved/getting to know in some of the underground type clubs and events that rare happening around you. Is there a Dr Sketchy in your town? A lot of the fetish balls look at having aerial artists. Get to know the burlesque dancers in your area and start going to their events. This really is a network thing. I would also consider finding a stage name.

I will also let you know that starting out there will be little to no pay. Although I think Dr Sketchy paid the girls about $50.

I second what Chem said about getting a stage pole, because unless you also have an act with no pole in it your limited to venues with poles already in them. Depending on where you live that is very limiting.
And it is about getting out there, so that people know what you can do and most likely at first for no pay or very small pay.

Are you willing/able to travel to Vegas? You would have ample opportunity here. I can put you in touch with audition folks as well if that might be an option for you.
