How long does it take for your videos to upload?
Posted by Pisces Poler on October 14, 2011 at 5:13 amJust a question for everyone on here who uploads videos to this site.
How long does it take your video to upload your vids?
Once it hits 100% how soon after that do you see your vid in the members section?
I’d love to know the process that others have, because I’m having problems uploading 🙁RoseMay replied 13 years, 1 month ago 6 Members · 16 Replies -

Depending on your video length, connection speed, etc., I have found it takes about an hour per min. I asked webmaster and he said it was my service. So, it is what it is, I am used to it. But that is about how long it is for me……

Thanks for the reply @LymeLyte https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif It was purely curiosity, because mine usually take a few hours when they upload too. I was wondering if it was just me or if it was a standard for everyone https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Apart from the connection speed it's also about the size of the file you're trying to upload. And this depends on the file format and quality of the video. 5 min long videos can be as small as 20 MB or they can be for example 1.5 GB large. That makes a huge difference.
On a faster connection uploading 20 MB takes me 5 minutes and with a slow connection it takes 30 minutes. Now go figure the time difference with 1.5 GB files https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif
(I never uploaded anything here on SV, but the principles are the same)
So while creating or editing videos it does make sense to think about the quality and file format you want and need it to be.

Rose, try uploading here. It will take longer. Im not sur why but it does. There was a forum somplace on here at one point about the time it takes. Many start their upload, go to bed an in the morning its on. 🙂

It depends on the format you save your files in. If I use WMM I can upload a video, even a big one in 5-10 minutes. When I first started uploading here I was using the editing software that came with my video camera… Hours!!

Yeah the standard (and only?) export file format for windows movie maker is a .wmv file with a high compression rate that makes the files very small and the quality worse, but still watchable.
A video editing software with more functions lets you chose the export file format and the size and so on https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
I personally use only .wmv files for internet uploads. For making pretty videos that I don't want to upload, but just watch for fun I usually make .avi files. The difference in video quality (and file size) is huge.

Fifteen minutes is the longest it has taken me to upload here. I use a flip video camera. Not the best, but, no way I would wait hours for something to load. Also, I never edit a video, other than cropping the beginning and end where I’m fumbling with the camera. My internet is WIFI and it is 4G.

It does depend…….i thought things would upload faster if i bought a flip camera, but webmaster said that wouldnt help. It has to do w connection, time of day, all kinds of factors. Glad some of you can upload so fast! Must b nice……

Sucks that it takes that long for some 🙁 I just figured keeping it simple and having fast internet is what made it quick for me. I’m super grateful you all upload your vids anyway. I really enjoy watching them. @allthatglitters- I watched and really enjoyed your challenge video. Sorry you’ve had such trouble loading it here 🙁

@HotelChick thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂 I had fun making it. It will hopefully make an appearance on SV very soon 😉

@rosemay- I agree the wmv is not the "best" but boy it saves space on my hard drive and makes uploads so much faster. I even cheat and open the finished product in my other program… then let it do its thing and save it for vids I want to keep or put on DVD. But I don't store avi on my comp… too many will really slow ya down! 🙂

Compressing your video will help with both the space it takes up on the hard-drive and how long it takes to upload.
Generally just looking at the output or save settings on your software of choice will give you options such as "compression" or "quality". Don't be fooled by the quality setting, generally you can cut a video's "quality" but up to 50% with no noticeable degradation.
Just this morning I compressed a nearly 1 gig video down to 14.6 megabytes, almost a hundredth of its original size, with no appreciable loss in video quality.

Webmaster, which program did you use for that?
After your post yesterday I searched on my own and found a tool which compressed a 1.2 GB file to 20 MB without visible loss of quality … except the music was gone https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

@RoseMay – I use a professional piece of software that comes in the Apple Final Cut Studio suite. There are other pieces out there however and most editing programs will do it as well.
My guess is there is a setting in the software you found that allows it to remove the audio to save space.

For anyone else looking for a free video compression program: http://handbrake.fr/
Works really well. You can play around with the settings to find a level of compression you can live with. And it doesn't remove the music https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
