How to Start Aerial Shoulder Mounting
Posted by megan12 on January 23, 2013 at 7:38 amI'm at the point where I want to try and begin aerial shoulder mounting. Now, here is my question…how do I get started? Should I be able to deadlift SM from the floor first? If I wanted to try aerial SM how would I start out? The only way I can think it to go into a figurehead and then from there SM. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks! 🙂

I do it from a figure head. After I started shoulder mounting from a pirouette with no kicking in my practise routines I was strong enough to do it.

Figure head is the most direct way 🙂
Work it from a standing position, lift both legs behind you and hand from SM grip then work on bringing the legs up and over – this way if you miss the pole atleast you aren't dropping from high up – I used to sprain my ankles when I was learning it because I would not make it all the way then jump down – ouch!

My instructor has me try aerial SMs even though I can’t do it! We go from side climb to figure head then try to tuck. She said you can push off the pole with one foot but that just confuses me :-/

i have tried this n felt a strsnge pull in my back i cnt get my shoulder to the pole right. so its on my to do list but not at the moment after the strange pull i got bout half way up then it pulled.

at 9 seconds you can see the foot push off…
🙂 good luck- i want to get aerial with the sm too.

Just MY opinion, but I suggest being able to deadlift the sm from the floor before moving it aerial. 🙂

Megan, I agree with PlatinumAni that you should be able to dead lift into a Shoulder Mount before working on the aerial. And as Charley said figure head is a good starting point, if your back is flexible you can also go into it from a superman.
Zoey, To keep stress off the back please make sure your keeping the chest lifted up allowing you to contract the muscles of the back. If you let the upper back round before lifting you may strain something! This goes for the Shoulder mount too. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Can you please explain what you mean by "deadlifting"? When I'm not kicking and can do a shoulder mount from the ground with one leg straight … is that deadlifting? Do I need to be able to have both legs straight? Or is the "not kicking" part enough?
-
I can almost deadlift. I tried yesterday. I can’t get my legs up over my shoulders quite yet. I think of deadlift as back arched, both legs straight and just lifting up.

RoseMay I would consider being able to consistently lift into the sm with no kick OR momentum a deadlift. For me personally I could do it with straight legs before I could aerial sm. It took quite a while after I could lift the sm for me to pull an aerial version even semi consistently. It is a tough move!

Here I do a "deadlift" SM at the very beginning of the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myyLUUN65g0&list=UUup79MtZnWP_SCAHeVlmzdQ&index=28

Shona I distinctly remember the burning abs and utter exhaustion of building up to deadlifting this. It gets better I promise!!
