Posted by AngelVonSpin on January 4, 2013 at 7:22 amMy pole goal this year is greatness…… Not satisfied to be good any longer but wanting to really crank it up and go for great………will consider aiming for a competition or some kick ass in the public domain performances…….what does that kind of improvement take, time , frequency and duration of training, cross training etc etc please for those who have managed to attain greatness I would love to know what it took….

Define great.
Your question is so broad that it is difficult to answer. If you tell us what you consider "great" then maybe we can help. Some want to be sexy, some want to be able to tell a story, some want to be tricksters, some want to have the flexibility of a contortionist. Also it helps if we know a little about your background. If you ahve no dance/gymnastics/martial arts/etc background it may take longer to get where you want to go.

You have to define greatness. What makes the big name pole stars great is not just that they can trick/bend/dance ect. it is that they bring their own unique tallents to the table. Amber Richards talks about this in her interview with Aerial Amy.

Like ChemGoddess1 said, we might be able to give you advice if you specify what you define as greatness.

If it still doesn’t work you can search for Amber Richards on Aerial Amy’s blog.

Not trying to be so specific here or directly relate it to myself, obviously for my own personal practice there are specific areas that I would need to work on to progress my pole. But I am interested in hearing from those out there who have been able to do the work that has taken them to a place that they would define as "great", that might include being able to dance for a whole song, busting out some new advanced and hard move, or winning a competition, performing etc.etc., essentially getting to that next level of pole that they feel really happy and satisfied with

Ok, since I've been studying some psychology, and even some sports and exercise psychology, and like to read about these kind of things, I will summarize some general tips for getting great, but at any sport.
1. In practicing for getting better, you need to practice with awareness. That mean that you alter your training sessions, an try new things. You need to get a challenge sometimes, in order to progress.
2. Repeat, repeat, repeat. The ones that are great, are not great for nothing. They spend loads of time practicing.
3. Get feed-back from someone, if you are not sure of how you are doing you are not able to improve the things that are not working.
4. Focus on what you need help with. Most of us focuses on the things we are alredy good at, when we could get super by imrpving the stuff that aren't really working for us.
5. Beprepared to work really hard, mentally and physically. There is a reson for the limite amount of people excelling, and that is that it takes time.
Hope that helped you somewhat, even though it is general advice. Then as the previous girls pointed out, I don't know if your goal is to get excellent just for the sake of it, or if you want to win the world cup 🙂 Since pole is more of an artform than sports for me, 'i think that maby one could focus on finding your own niche. Pole is relatively new, so I think that there is loads of room for finding new ways to express yourself 🙂 Good luck!
