I am rubbish :(
Posted by SlowLearnerScottish on September 19, 2012 at 12:49 pmI decided to try and film a few moves today cause it's a bit of a goal to put together a wee video but I am SO disappointed! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif
I look incredibly ungraceful, fat (I know the blight of women everywhere) and I look like I've been pole dancing for 5 minutes rather than 10 months.
I thought when I was doing it I looked strong and sexy but apparently I just look like a daft wee girl prancing round a bit of metal.
Pretty gutted really! I know it's not really a question or anything but I'm just feeling so pants right now….

i decided to video myself today just doing spins and a bit of dancing and i look about as graceful as a baby elephant so i know exactly how you feel. I can do tricks and spins well but when i try and put a routine together it just Looks rubbish 🙁 i wish i could say something positive but at least we are in the same boat lol

We are our own worst critics, but if you are truly displeased with your form, decide what you don't like about a particular move and practice it in the mirror over and over and over. Analize how peoplea re doing it that you DO like and see what you are doing differently.

Continue to record yourself! I found that seeing myself in the mirror and on video helped me to fix problem areas I didn’t like and learn to move in a way that is more aesthetically pleasing. The first video is never the best, anyone can tell you that!

Please remember we are our own worst critics!
You need to use what you see to your advantage though, continue to record practices and work on fixing some small points that need fixing. Just being able to DO a move isn't enough, you still need to perfect it. Without a mirror or camera, that is nearly impossible. Keep working at it, and if you're feeling brave post a video. No matter how bad you think it is, I guarantee that you will get positive support. Sometimes, knowing what other people see will help increase your confidence, making your moves look even better!

Please don’t say such things about yourself! I’m sure that you’d never criticize someone else the way you did yourself. I’m pretty positive that you’re NOT rubbish in any way. You took a huge step in recording yourself. Do you know how brave, how courageous that makes you??? Continue on! Work slowly and work on movements that make your heart sing. Dance for yourself and you will begin to start seeing things in yourself that you like. I know you will!

we are very hard on ourselves, you know what, filming yourself is the best thing you can do! check out wich moves you need to work on, what looks graceful, what doesnt, and then it will help you to grow .

I film a little bit of almost EVERY session I do. Most if not all of those may never see the light of day, BUT I go through and watch every session and critique and correct myself. I point out to my myself what I'm doing wrong and sometimes I will watch it before a session and repeat a move I know I did not perform well. Being as I AM fat I'm usually not worried about "looking" fat in my recordings- but that hasn't stopped me from learning what angles I can perform tricks at to give the sexiest view possible. (or keep myself from doing a perticularly UN-sexy view)
I know I'm not great, but that doesn't stop me; and it shouldn't stop you either.
Sometimes posting the video and also getting outside critique may be exactly what is needed. Maybe it's just personal opions blocking the way from you seeing how… "great that spin was" or "what a graceful invert that was" or something. All in all though- you are not rubbish. 10 months of poling is an accomplishment! You are amazing- and if you want to make a video and post it; be damned what people think. Be proud of yourself for coming as far as you've come. If you don't want to post a video- then be damned what people think even more so! Either way- you are amazing, and don't you forget that. -
Ah slow learner, you're in good company! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif I recorded myself do a full dance (or "dance" as it were) last night and there were so many parts where i just walked around the pole looking lost with a giant "?!" over my head before clumsily starting a move. But then I tell myself "that's what video editing software is for" you notice all those fades in between some of the videos? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif
My motto with everything I've ever done is "just keep turning up", and over time it'll get better. Focus on the good bits in your recording, and if there are no good bits yet, keep recording, they'll turn up, briefly at first, but for longer and longer over time.

Like @dustbunny said "We are our own worst critics."
However that being said I feel it's wonderful to video what your doing. When teaching you'll often hear from me "You ARE what you DO". I'm trying to get dancers to look at their lines in the mirror to forge a strongger "shape to muscle memory connection". Unless you have an outside eye or a great set of mirrors around your pole, the video is an excellent tool to offer you honest feedback. It's so much easier to correct or improve when you know what it is you are realy doing. Film on.

Bad videos are good because they show you how far you have come in your pole journey 🙂 in my first exam vid, I could point out a million things I didn’t do well or that didnt look pretty, but in the ebd I gave in and I congratulated myself on finishing a full routine and being examined. My 2nd exam, I did exactly the same, but comparatively it is much better, so, my moral of the story is, you will always see the bad in your vids but that’s good because in time the bad demonstrates your good improvements 🙂
