So…I need advice. I've read Aerial Amy's blog on pole thickness when it comes to buying a pole (unfortunately I read it after I had purchased my pole). I have a 50mm chrome, and ever since I purchased it I've known it was too big for me (I'm 5' 3" with pretty small hands). Though my grip strength IS increasing, I never truly feel secure holding on and even during a basic plank I feel the need to "wrap" my hand/wrist instead of simply holding onto the pole due to fear of hand slippage.

The problem is, my pole has really not seen that much use as I didn't get it too long ago, so I feel silly in wanting to get a new pole so quickly. Is there any shame in me wanting to downsize to a smaller pole already? I mean, part of me wants to stick it out because if I can pole on this, I can probably pole on any other pole; however, if I don't feel confident/secure in my grips I'm probably also likely to learn things incorrectly to compensate for my hand grip.

Therefore, I need some advice from the wise minds around here who have more experience with poles. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif

I started on a powder coated, 50mm Lil Mynx and sold it for a 45mm, stainless steel Platinum Stages two months later. Lol 🙂 It was mostly because the Lil Mynx wouldn't fit in my new place, but I definitely have no regrets about it. I am in love with my pole now. I sold the Mynx for 200 and my pole was 300, so it wasn't even a huge expense and it was totally worth it (I far prefer both the thinner diamater and the steel finish).

That said, I can still do pretty much everything I can on a 45 on a 50, so it isn't like a thicker pole hugely inhibits me, but the way I look at it… it's really nice to have a pole that I LOVE and work well on, rather than one I think is just ok.

Plus, if it's fairly new, you can still get a decent price for it.

If you really want to downsize, I would do it now while your pole is at its most valuable. I ended up choosing to buy a 45 after learning on 50s at the studio and as crazy as it sounds, once I started using my 45, I couldn't understand why anyone would like a 50 better except for leg hold stuff. I feel so much more secure in my grips and I'm improving faster. It really is all about personal preference though. See if you can find someone with a 45 that will let you try it out. That's what I did.

That is a good point! I should probably sell it while it has only been used a handful of times!

Xpole has the 40mm too which I bought recently and I love it. I've got small hands and in the studio I practice with 45mm & 50mm and some tricks are too tough for me. The 40mm I own gives me more confidence on the grip and I dont feel any much difference with my leg grips either. I think a bigger pole would make you more frustrated if you dont improve as much as a smaller pole.

Hey Jeny how big are your hands? Just curious, because I have never used anything but a 50. From the tip of my fingers to the base of my palm is about 6 inches

I have the opposite problem.  I just bought a 45 and I don't like it.  I like the 50.  I want to practice the gemini and different inverts and it seems more difficult.  The xpole store said it will be hard at first but then I would love the 45 but I'm not so sure :-/  Maybe we could swap poles.  Lol

No shame in wanting to change pole size.  I started few years ago with a Lil Mynx because that's all I knew about.  It was fine till I began to get more involved with pole and it wasn't working for me anymore.  After two years I got a 50mm titan gold x pole and loved it.  Then tried a 45mm at a studio and "loved" it.  So after about a year got a 45mm chrome xpert, I was so used to titan gold I struggled on the chrome, so within few months got my 45mm titan gold xpert LOL  I sold my 50mm and still have my two 45's.  Actually, the chrome is up now.  Depending on weather I think will determine which one I use.

And I'm not even as advance or experienced as others, but needed to get what works for me 🙂   I think we've all been there.

I'm 5'1", and my hands are 6.5" from the base of the palm to the tip of my longest finger.  I initially bought a 50, and 6 months later decided I didn't like it – I had a friend who had 45s, and whenever I went to her house that was all I used.

Through networking with the girls in the area, I was able to find someone who was willing to trade her 45 for my 50.  I was extremely lucky to find her, I think, and it was a perfectly even trade – both were Xperts and had the same finish to them – the only difference was the size.  Don't feel bad because you've only had it a short amount of time and don't like it – If you aren't happy and feel safe on it, you won't use it!  I gradually stopped using mine at home because I didn't like the big, fat thing!  But I LOVE the 45 I have now!  I'm so much happier, and feel like I can do so much more because I can actuallly wrap my fingers all the way around the pole!!

My friend now has a 40, and that skinny little pole is awesome.  I myself am nervous about getting one, though, as most studios, competitions and clubs will still have 50s (and maybe a 45 or two) and I don't want to get too used to the skinny pole.

Don't feel bad about switching – if you're not comfortable with what you have, why keep it??  Get one that you will LOVE and USE!!  ^_^  With as small as your hands are (slightly smaller than mine) I'm sure you'll be MUCH happier with a 45 – you'll actually be able to grip it!  https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Thanks, Kitty, I actually ordered a 45 last night!!! 🙂 I really wanted a 40 but I dont want to get too used to it, like you said. Then I’m going to use the box from my 45 to ship my 50 when I sell it, since I couldn’t find a great fitting box haha
