I sit and I watch all these lovely videos from all these wonderful dancers and I tend to wonder, where did they start?… Did they have a dance background?  Since I am starting from scratch.. no dance, no flexibilty, nor workout background, I just wanted to ask everyone how long they have been poling, and if they started with a strong dance or athletic background.

     Thanks

I've been poling since '07 and i started from nothing. including– never really did anything athletic. I tried to play tennis and run track in high school though?

I had no dance or gymnastic background before pole. I was athletic, but not remarkably so. I was a thrower in college, specialty javelin, and could barely string two pullups together. Since I started pole, I am in much better shape over all and much stronger, though I haven't set foot in a weight room in years.

I have absolutely no dance background. Then again, I've struggled with some of this, so it may be very obvious that I don't.

I was on a jump rope team in Elementary school and Jr. High. In high school, I was in the marching band, but other than that, I've never did anything athletic. I joined the Corps of Cadets at A&M when I went to college and got my butt whipped into shape. An injury midway through junior year really slowed me down. After graduating, I got a very sedentary job and apart from walking my dogs, never did much. I did a pole workshop in February 2011 and started my lessons many months later in October.

I guess I started from nothing, but I can tell a difference in my body since starting. Even though I'm still not happy with how I look, I love pole and it has gotten me moving. I'd definitely need more cardio to do much weight wise. My strength is almost as good as it's ever been, apart from my college days. You wouldn't believe the number of pushups and situps I was able to do my sophomore year. How time changes things.

No fitness background other than the weekly family hike or cross country ski trip with my family as a kid, but I stopped that as soon as I was a teenager. I've been poling since August last year, and while the tricks and spins are coming along well, I still find it hard to find that dance-y flow in my pole routines since I have no dance background.. 🙂

No real background for me either… I did cheerleading, gymnastics, ballet and figure skating as a child but none for very long. No sports or any exercise at all in high school or college.

I picked up pole 8 months ago. I was in alright shape as I had started working out a few months prior to that (just running and some pilates) and I used to work a pretty physically intense job. I could do maybe 5-8 pushups before starting pole?

I've always taken naturally to gymnastic type things so a lot of the strength/trick type stuff has come relatively quick to me but I suuuuck at dancing and my flow is awful. I'm not very graceful lol.

I have no dance or gymnastic experience either. However, I've always loved to move my body! Health was my favorite subject in grade school. lol

As a child I taught myself to cartwheel and could roundoff. I did the splits (middle only) but didn't think to work on back mobility. My sisters took me roller skating and ice skating when I was little. Later I taught myself how to figure skate in my early teens by reading books. I think I was 15 or 16 when I took a few sessions of lessons. In my 20s I went back to an adult skating class for a session. I've always caught on to anything physical very quickly. Math….not so much!! I did cheerleading from grade school through most of high school, BUT its very, very, small town stuff. No tumbles, the one girl who could do a back flip was a goddess to everyone! It was the kind of cheering where the kids made up the moves!! hehe.https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif I also rode horse for a little bit, before I took my skating lessons. I knew I wanted to focus on something phyical, but nothing stuck until I found POLE!!

I was into weight lifting for a few yrs before I discovered pole. My ace certification and personal training experience is what helped me find my way when I was new to pole. So even though I was never formally trained in anything, my experiences have all helped increase body awareness for.https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

I am probably one of the least active people on this site! I tried out for cheerleading senior year in hs and was rejected. Also tried out for dance team and was rejected! Tried out for pep squad and made it, but quit because family couldn’t afford it. So in college one semester I took tap fitness, Latin cardio groove, and yoga and those classes were on the same day lol! So I got somewhat in shape that semester but that was years ago. I took my first pole class in September 2011 and was hooked. So getting flexible and pole dancing are now my goals and I enjoy doing them. I’m still very stiff and have no rythym with dance but I hope to change that and surprise myself and everyone else!

In high school I couldn't finish the mile because I was too chubby. I now hold the title as the third place Midwest rookie pole champion, how about them apples!!!!!!!
