Inverts and red face
Posted by Chrissy485 on June 16, 2010 at 2:21 pmOkay, maybe a strange question, but every time I invert or do handstands my face gets really red because all of the blood is rushing to it. Does this eventually stop or is there a way to lessen it? It just doesn’t make me feel or look very sexy. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif
Thanks!!!

it dosen’t go away…lol only suggestions are to dance in dim lighting, wear hair long so it can cascade over your face while inverted, do arm and head movements that hide your face…l have the same problem! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Ha ha! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif Well, at least it’s not just me! Thanks for the suggestions!

i call this "pole face" and it has ruined many a photo… haha.
in all seriousness, i think it’s somethign we all deal with. the only advice i can give you is to make sure you’er breathing…. holding your breath makes it worse!

red is the least of my concerns…I have a HUGE vein that runs up my forehead and it POPS out big time when I invert…makes me look like a muscle head! lmao! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Thanks for all of the replies! I swear this is the best site for pole dancers. Everyone is so supportive and makes me feel so much better about myself and my pole abilities. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
Thanks again!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

For me, it’s not just my head, it’s my neck and shoulders! It’s really bad for me. I thought it was because of my age. I call it ‘Tomato Head’. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_spiderman.gif

Same problem here! And it’s the same for me too…head, face, neck, shoulders…yeah. I think people with a certain skin tone deal with it more than others. It seems to be more common in people with paler, pink undertones (that’d be me!) Nice to know you’re not alone, and that there’s nothing wrong with you! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I second spinnyfox’s comments! Whether I am working out hard or just standing outside in hot weather, I tend to look all flushed like I’m dying. The pole just exemplifies that unfortunate tendency.

Yes! People look at me all worried-like if I take an aerobics class, I get SO red! Eh. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif I did a ckr infront of my husband the other day, thinking I looked so sexy, until I caught a glimpse of my practically purple face, neck, shoulders and arms in the mirror. Not hot at all. My husband said that it will go away when I’m not straining for the strength, but…I’m the kind of person that turns bright red when embarrassed so…I think it’s going to be a way of life. I’m in the process of growing my hair so I can hide behind it. I, like Roxy, also have a huge vein that pops out of the middle of my forehead while inverted. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif

I have that problem to, my teacher said you can learn some breathing techniques to stop getting your face red while upside down. Would be nice to learn that since its not very nice to look like your head is about to explode https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_razz.gif

Do you know what kind of breathing techniques she uses? I’d definitely like to learn some of those! It seems to have improved a little bit on moves that are easier, but handstands are still ridiculous! I honestly look like my head is about to explode. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif

No, Im not even sure that she used it. But she did tell me that there are some breathing techniques when I was complaining about my red face. I didnt ask wich one. Maybe I should have. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_razz.gif
Maybe some yoga breathing technique? heheh well i dont know… :S
But I do know i that it makes difference to breathe while doing the moves. Holding your breath can make it worse.

Breath, breath and BREATH.. this is so important even more so if you have high blood pressure!!
The Valsalva maneuver should be avoided both in pole and weight training!!!!! (Think of taking quick short breaths then holding your breath and exerting force) er ummm…think straining for a "tough bowl" movement. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif lol not what you want!
Here is how I use my breath when I pole
Exhale on exertion…here’s and example…Invert into Caterpillar:
inhale fully,
exhale try making an audible hhhhhhh sound while lifting up into invert… (jaw is relaxed)…keep it slow. Not a forceful quick exhale.
once up, calmly inhale (I like to do it though my nose)…not short little gasps!!
on your next need to exhale…press up into caterpillar while making your…hhhhhhh…..hold the position and continue to breath, deeply, slowly and with control. If you find your dizzy or have headaches after poling you might be holding your breath…this goes for spins too!!! No sure if that was helpful…tried to keep it short and sweet. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif
