per my Dr's orders.  Last month I started doing the Couch to 5K app.  I knew I needed more cardio and I hate to run so I thought this may be what I needed.  Ive been doing it for a few weeks and I noticed a difference in my running, heck I started to enjoy running.

Well, my knees didnt like me running.  After a few weeks ive developed runners knee and OMG it effing sucks!  I have a knee stabilizer and ive been icing it as much as I can but its hard when you got a house to run and kids to chase after.  I went to the dr since Ive had previous knee issues and maybe there might be another step.

This is why I like my Dr, he doesnt sugar coat it.  He doesnt throw pills at the problem, he finds the source and fixes it.  The gist of our appt went that im fat, I cant run until I lose about 50lbs.  I can walk, ride the bike or use the elliptical.  He told me if I continued running eventually there would be long recovery ahead of me – MRI, X Rays and possibly a knee replacement.  Im only 27 and hes not ready to replace my knee at this age.

I went to the gym and walked at a faster pace and on an incline instead.  My knees thanked me.  But with Ms Xpose being on Sat, I need all the rest I can get to win this!  My friends and I thought about glittering a knee brace I can wear during my performances!  But if it comes down to it, I wont perform with shoes.  Bummer but I would rather take care of my knee than have it replaced!

That sucks, I'm sorry!  It sounds like you're being very smart about it by going to the dr. and following his orders.  I've never had runner's knee but it sounds awful 🙁  Good job finding alternatives like walking on an incline, you sound determined.  My mom has knee issues and she loves walking stairs at the stadium because it's high intensity but low impact.  Take care and heal up fast!

The article is talking about excessive running (20+ hours a week) without cross training.  A couch to 5k program seems like a good moderate amount to supplement pole training.  It is an interesting read though.

The article covers the larger issues of what steady-state cardio can do to a body, and while the author uses a threshold of 20 hrs+/week to make most of its case in the article, it's important to start a conversation about what people are actually hoping to accomplish when they do steady-state cardio… another article to reference is http://www.builtlean.com/2010/06/04/high-intensity-interval-training-hiit-best-cardio-to-burn-fat/

i don't mean to push my opinions on others, but i know a lot of people who are under the impression that you "need" to do "cardio" to be healthy or fit and it's just not the case. if you love running, you find it meditative or relaxing or whatnot, then not being able to run is awful… but if you're looking to burn fat, build endurance, etc, then steady state cardio isn't the right route to take.

Ah,  yeah I agree that concept is pushed to the extreme sometimes.  Strength training is also awesome for calorie burn but it seems like cardio gets all the credit.  I wonder why the author didn't give a healthier alternative, or say what type and amount of cardio is healthy, and I wonder if snacking during endurance runs changes the equation at all.

This is a very interesting discussion–I lost nearly 50lbs almost 3yrs ago. I am not yet where I want to be weight wise. I have been trying to push myself harder with training. Pole 3 days/wk and workout videos on my off pole days (usually Jillian Michaels Shred or Ripped which does cardio, strength, core intervals). I was thinking of taking up running, but this def. has me wondering if that is the right step. I've platued hard where I am right now.

Minicoopergirl–keep at it! I too have 3 young kids and its doable! I can't get to gyms and such cause that always ate up too much time, but after the kids go to bed I don't do anything till the workout is done. Also I find that writing down every single calorie while neaurotic, does help SO much. Good luck!

My sister has lost about 70lbs just from running. She hasnt incorporated weights yet but thats her next step.  My sister played softball her entire life, she would lose 30-50lbs every season (she played in the spring, summer and fall.  Shes competed at the Softball World Series and has met Jennie Finch) and during the summer put some of it back on.  She would tell you the reason she would knock the ball out of the park (ive wittnessed it a few times) so she didnt have to run all the way.  She would run to 1st and be wiped out.  Once she starts doing some weight training (she was part of the power lift club in HS), the rest of her weight will drop off. Now shes running 2miles with out a problem!

The running was only for a cardio thing – I normally do about 10-15min on 2-3 different machines.  But doing C25K was the first thing ive done where ive done 30min of straight cardio.

Right now im just walking a little faster on a high incline – I never knew how many calories you can burn just by doing that.  I also try and take walks at lunch too.  Both dealerships I work for are right next to each other so its about a 1/4mil as a full lap.  Some days a group of us do 2 laps.

Today my knee feels AWESOME!!  I actually started to bend it yesterday when I was on the couch.  Ive been trying to ice and rest as soon as I get home and ice some more after my kids go to bed.  I even iced it this morning when I woke up at 2a for no reason.  Im even brace free for 2days.

Are there any fitness places that incorporate HIIT? Crossfit? I find HIIT to be VERY difficult to do by myself (Trying to give it your all while at the same time looking at your stop watch!)

I really like the elliptical! It's sort of similar to running, still a high level of cardio but it's no impact so your knees don't get hit as hard!

If you find your missing the "runner's high", I'd suggest giving that a go if you haven't already!

Before I could run my PT had me doing elliptical – the challenge is there without the impact and when you’ve lost the weight and can run You’ll probably find you can run way more. That said I’m only meant to do one long run per week – the rest is intervals as it burns more calories (the intervals still let my long runs get longer and longer). Keep doing whatever you safely can, you’ll be thankful for that soon enough I bet 🙂
