I need some advice…I’m in constant frustration because I want a nice flat sexy v when I do a knee tuck while inverting…it’s like my knee lock and I can’t extend my legs like I want to. Has anyone ever had this? How do you stop it? If you don’t know what I mean, I can post a video! Please help!

I get this to sometimes when trying to straighten my legs etc. And they pop, so do my hips. Don’t know how to get rid of it but I know it isn’t as bad when i’m really warmed up and stretched.

I did not have a problem with my knee locking but i have a problem fully extending legs in a v. Alethea has a nice stretch which she calls the Felix stretch where you sit in a straddle on the floor push the knee into the floor with the opposite hand and flex the foot and pull it up with the same hand. Another stretch she has is to straddle then push back of knee into the floor flex feet off the floor and point. These have helped my open V to look a lot nicer. I also found a lot of this had to do with my flexibility too.

Hmm… have you seen a doctor abut this? Does your knee lock up at any other time?
Could be indicative of a problem with your muscles or joints lining up properly, or incorrectly engaging certain muscles (which I sort of doubt, considering you’re working on full inverts, I would hope you don’t have any imbalances!)
My suggestion would be to try to do it really, really slowly. From the floor, if you have to, in order to find the problem and see if there is a way to get around it. Doing it slow will give you an excellent indication of exactly when and where the issue is happening, and what it feels like when it does happen (you’d be surprised, we can often tell if it’s bone or muscle, or something else!), and whether or not you can use a certain amount of twist or different muscles to prevent it.
Though, I would recommend going to a doctor also. Knee troubles are something I’m fairly familiar with… and I would rather you catch it early and not have to go through lots of pain and frustration!

I’m guessing it’s simply a matter of needed to train the legs how to fully extend, this can take a lot of time. Also not everyones leg line will look totally flat, some will always have a bit of bend at the knee. Do you have a video?

I will post a video tonight, I’m pretty flexible and have a beautiful spinning helicopter….just tried the knee tuck yesterday and couldn’t stretch my legs! Yes I have the alethea Austin DVDs I use them all the time. I may talk to my doctor because my knees literally lock i hate it and it’s not just the knee tuck that it affects!

Im going to rapid fire some questions at you. Do you have pain in your knees? Do they also lock up when you walk or give out on you when walking? Does it lock or do you have pain when getting up from a squat? Do the knees swell? If yes to some of those question you may have a meniscus injury and you should consult your doctor. That can happen if you pivot to forcefully on a planted foot.
