I’ve decided that I need a foam roller but I’m not sure which one. I’m pretty sure I’ll go with a firmer roller like Veena recommends since I enjoy a pretty firm massage. I’m looking for one made in the USA. So I’m wondering if the 36″ or the 18″ is more popular. Seems like the 18″ would be easier to travel with but are you limited by the length? Also, my main reason for getting one is to help with flexibility. I’ve been working on my splits for a while now but getting discouraged by my lack of progress. I’m not a flexible person by nature but I’d like to have one splits by the end of the year. I’m hoping a roller can help me progress a little.

I’ve only just got on this foam roller train and I wish I had done it sooner. I have yet to really see the results but just DOING IT feels so great for me! I have back problems and this thing has done wonders to help me sleep and move more comfortably throughout the day, especially after poling. I put it off for a long time because, really, I was like “That’s pretty expensive for something that looks like a $1 pool noodle” and I really hate that foam texture against my skin. So, I purchase one that doesn’t feel or look like that. It cost me about $30, the brand is Gold’s Gym, and it’s a 6″ x 10″ massage foam roller. Surprised to find out I love this damn thing when I’ve heard people talk so much about how tough it is at first. If I had this from the get-go, even before pole, my back-muscles and such would have been a lot less tender or sore.

    Hi SToast

I bought a foam roller for home use a few months ago from Amazon and love it! It is 18 inches long and I manage to foam roll all parts of my body with no limitations and the shorter length definitely makes it easier to store. My boyfriend uses it a lot and claims it really helps his rehabilitation from tough calisthenic training.
I can’t comment on it’s impact on helping attain flexibility however I would recommend watching not only Veena’s lessons on foam rolling, but also researching how SMR works because I think that it will help you understand how to effectively foam roll and why.

Good luck with your foam rolling and flexibility training!!

    *6″ x 18″

I don’t know why I posted 6″ x 10″, but that was not what I wanted to type.
