All medicinal purposes aside, I do not agree that marijuana should be used for recreational purposes. Why take something to alter your state of mind? I have been diagnosed with depression and I found that exercise and work help me a lot. There are no toxins entering my airways and it has other great benefits like building strength and endurance. As for orally injesting substances, I shy away from caffeine because I do consider it a mild drug and I know many people addicted to it, so I would not take marijuana or another drug either. For me, it comes down to having positive control over my body and not risking my brain with mind altering drugs. Yes, I will recreationally drink, because I have great control over my drinking, but I also agree with Chem that some people just don't have control and to me, these people should not be drinking.
I will also add that I find smoking extremely irritating. It makes me physically sick to be around people that are smoking cigarettes and I did not go anywhere that allowed it when it was legal indoors. I know all my Veeners are respectful people that would not smoke around people that don't like it, but I see people smoking in non-smoking areas almost every day. Sometimes I see employees smoking right outside entrances to their place of work, sitting right next to the non-smoking sign! It would bother me if a big truck was blowing exhaust next the building and this bothers me similarly. I imagine all this behaviour would be be repeated in marijuana users, for the most part. Again, I know you all are more respectful than that 🙂

There are actually studies that show, i think its under the age of 25 u can do the most damage to ur brain smoking pot ….. but over the age there is not much damage u can do…. I prefer pot smokers over alcoholics by far and cigs BUT if anyone were to have a gene or suffer from a mental disorder meaning anxiety or schitzo? spelling? it actually can bring out ur illness and make u worse!!!!! so for some ppl yes… asuming everything needs to be done in moderation…… i have nothing wrong with it… but i dont believe every one or every age should be smoking it nor do i condone ppl who just smoke it to numb feelings due to it actually can make them worse…. but … the odd joint once in a while…. i prefer that oer anything else alot less harmful

I started smoking pot when I was 14. And trust me when I say, pot was the least of my problems when I was a teen. I was never physically addicted to it…I was a troubled girl who lost a lot of family members in only 4 months and never had the help I needed to cope. So I turned to the one thing that made me giggle, eat, and feel connected to the earth (don’t laugh…that mentality really helped me put things into perspective) I was arrested when i was about 16 for posession and had to attend court ordered NA meetings regularly. Here I saw what a real addiction consisted of and this is when I knew I was NOT addicted to pot. I was on probation so I turned to drugs that would leave my system quicker than weed.. It wasn’t until I was a sophomore in HS that I started running with the wrong crowd (not my pot friends) and got heavy into crap like coke and pills. That continued until a year after graduation. Then I turned to LSD. I would drop everyday- it got to the point where i could go to work high on 2 or 3 (or 4 or 5) hits and noone would be the wiser. It was an addiction because it consumed my life. I couldn’t stand being sober. It was terrible. I have battled addiction with a few substances, weed not being even close to one of them. I’m 4 1/2 years sober (not including marijuana because I never considered that a threat to my health) and I feel great. I do occassionally partake in vaporizing marijuana (not a drinker-alcoholism is “in my blood”) as an anxiety reducer. Plus, vaporizing doesn’t make me lazy-it often has the opposite effect on me.
I’m sorry but when I look at my family’s/others’ problems/addictions, pot is menial. My mother always tells me she would rather me smoke pot than smoke cigarettes, drink or anything else. I agree with Chem, I know MANY super successful lawyers, docs, and business owners that are regular pot smokers.

I should mention that occassionaly is a bit of a stretch as most nights I do vaporize to relax and enjoy my evening. Kind of like a glass of wine! Just thought I’d be honest ( with myself and with you all!)
Katana- as Amy stated- you can eat it 😉

Nope. It’s a device that uses a ceramic heating element to produce vapor rather than smoke.

I thought i'd add my 2 cents.
Never been a fan of cigarettes. Never had a puff in my life and i plan on keeping it that way. Pot on the other hand…
The first time i smoked pot, i was 16 and i was really scared that my parents would know somehow lol so i was paranoid but i honestly didn't feel any effect until my 4th time. Now, I smoke pot a couple times a week on and off (i take breaks, sometimes i get sick of it) and i've come across many different kinds and i have to say, different strains have different effects just like different types of alcohol have a different drunk. Sometimes pot makes me anxious, sometimes it relaxes me, sometimes it makes me talkative, sometimes lazy, sometimes it make me munch out and sometimes it even makes me clean my room! Of course it only makes me anxious if i'm already worried about something or there's something wrong so i avoid smoking it when i feel imbalanced, if you know what i mean.
I've never heard of some one getting home after smoking up and beating their significant other like i have heard with alcohol and other drugs. It definitely has SOME affect on your lungs but it depends entirely (if you smoke it) on your methode. Bong, pipe, vaporizer, hot knifing, single hitter, bubbler, apple pipe, joint. Lots of options! Vaporizer being the best for your lungs and to me the smoke tastes like roasted pumplin seeds…for some reason.
I'm all for the use of it as long as you have a handle on yourself. i'd love to at least see it decriminalized because honestly pot heads aren't a burden on society in my opinion, they don't belong in jail for smokin a joint after work.
I find it milder on my body than alcohol and even advil or tylenol. It helps me with lady cramps and head aches and it numbed my throat when i had mono(which was awful…never get mono!). It's helped my insomniac sisters sleep and it's helped someone i know eat more and believe me she needed to. For these reasons i don't have a problem with it myself. i see a lot of good in it. Stoners are sharers
Everyone has their opinion and i'm all for that. As so many have said before me, to each their own 🙂

Pole Happy- haha hot knifing! those KILL me! And 100% YES on the different strains produce different effects. I tend to stay away from indica…unless I want to be useless. Your response made me LOL.

yeah this discussion is awesome and SashaMae … I battled with different drugs in highschool as well…. i cleaned up when i was 16 aside from weed……. cuz to me its not a drug.. only reason i only do it on occasions now instead of every night before bed is because i found it was making me so paranoid seeing as i have an anxiety disorder that i cant smoke it all the time because it was doing more harm then good… but yes i hate drinking…. but i dont think theres anything wron with the odd joint or too.. but thats for me personally even if u were to do it every night whatever makes u happy and calm…. I AM PRO CHOICE …. and alcohol is way worse then weed i hate ppl who are drunk they are unpredictable …. ppl who smoke weed are just more cautious 🙂

Have nothing against it. I am not a Pot Smoker, never really did anything for me. I am an RN and get tested so no drugs for me. My husband RIP had a really bad pot problem and he spent way too much money on it and it made him lazy and boring. He overdid it just like he overdid everything. I would have to say he was addicted. Then he got busted twice and got 2 Felonies. That was way back when 1 joint could get you in a ton of trouble. Caused alot of problems and fights. As far as it being used for medicine? None of my friends in Calif that have Medical Marijuanna cards have anything wrong with them. Anyone can can buy a card there. I have given THC pills to brain tumor patients before and it seemed to work well.
I come from the LSD, Mescaline, Peyote, Pot, Hash and Cocaine Era. Pot is really the least of all evils.
I say to each their own. I like my red wine.

I am strongly against young people smoking, simply because science and medicine have proven that the health consequences and mental damage it does at that age is particularly serious when the brain is still developing. However, I am kind of one of those people who think you should try everything once, and I've tried it several times and it does nothing for me. I think certain drugs suit certain personalities, and alcohol is my drug of choice 🙂 However one of my best friends is addicted to pot, and while she has admitted that she she has a problem (she can't sleep without it, spends too much money on it etc) that does not take away from the fact that I love her and that she is a beautiful person. I think everyone has a weakness or an "achilles heel" so who are we to judge? However, I think if you know you have an addictive/obsessive or extreme personality, then you should be careful to not get into the habit of regularly taking any drug or stimulant. Everything in moderation 😉

Well… I'm kinda neutral. I'm almost dealthy allergic to it- so for the most part I really don't want it legalized and smoked on the streets or something. I have friends who I adore who smoke pot and I'm fine with that- I will even suffer the breathing problems it causes for me to hang out with them when they smoke. I don't like people who "hot box" rooms because then it seeps into walls and THROUGH walls and causes some major issues for me (for example one of my neighbors smokes on a none stop basis and it leaks through into the washroom- my laundry comes back smelling like pot and gives me hives and breathing problems so I have to walk seven blocks with my laundry to wash anything now.)
As far as I know there aren't a lot of people who are allergic to it the way I am- I will usually get a sore throat for several days with very light contact. But with stronger exposure It tends make my throat close, cause my heart to mis-beat (something like a murmur and a heart attack? I have no clue but it puts me on the floor right quick), nose bleeds, sevear headaches, yadda yadda. I have to say- being a non-smoker and having to go to the ER for any of that is…… just no good.
So yeah… I'm in the neutral zone. It's great to see my friends unwind on occasions- I really hope that non of them overuse it but I also really would appriciate it if it just didn't flippin exist. (and if lavender didn't exist that would be just peachy. I'm just as allergic to that and for some reason every farmers market some jerk has to be selling dried bundles and have them hung so it can be on the breeze. bleh.) Oh but I'm REALLY against it being used on animals and for kids to smoke it under the age of 17. But I think that's something else entierly. 🙂

Wow, you Veeners never cease to impress me with your rhetoric, nor your abilities to keep convos on hot button issues civil!
That being said, I have to chime in on this awesome feed! Personally, I tend to lean towards the libertarian belief system. I'm very big on "do as you will, so long as it harms none" idealism. That being said, I stand the same on marijuana use. I believe that it should be legal regardless of whether it's for recreation or health and regardless of whether we prove it to be beneficial or harmful to the user.
I don't believe that moral opinions should dictate laws, what should dictate laws is the preservation of each individual's right to live a free and individually fulfilling life. If smoking marijuana does this for someone, I say the government has no place to keep that from them. In fact, I really don't think that they have much right to regulate it at all. Except in the cases of DUI's, in which I believe should still exist because the dangers caused by driving under the influence can harmfully invade on other people's lives without their consent.
While I have read plenty of research and watched tons of documentaries on the pros of marijuana and personally do believe that it really is a versatile remedy and healer, I don't use that as my argument for legalization. Although, I do think that it's important to share that information so potential or current users could make an educated decision on whether to use it if marijuana were legal, I just don't think it should be neccessary to prove marijuana "good" or "bad" in deciding it's legality.
I mostly think that legalization should be less about the pros/cons and more about the freedom to choose what is right for us and our own bodies.
