With all the talk about legalizing it I thought I should mention another option. Something that was done here in B.C Canada. Decriminalize it.
I live in northern BC and I honestly think I'm one of the like 5 people in my larger city that doesn't smoke. Its just not for me.
With decriminalization if you have under a certain amount on you (don't remember what that amount is off hand) and you are caught by cops it will be confiscated but there will be not charges. There will only be charges if you are caught with an amount that would be deemed as someone who is dealing it.
This is not prefect at all but I wanted to share an alternative to the legal or non legal options. There is still a lot of talk about legalizing pot in Canada and honestly I am for medical marijuana. If Marijuana were to become legal we would probably have teh same restrictions around it as we do for alcohol. Age limits, not smoking in public places.(like how you are not allowed to drink in the streets or will be arrested for being a drunk public nuisance) If the government were to control it it would be safer. What a lot of people don't realized is that dealers are cutting their pot with other drugs like cocaine to make them have a stronger effect. This is dangerous and many people out there buying have no idea.
If it were made legal it could be controlled and made safer and the government could tax the hell out of it and funnel that money into other health programs. (Unlikely but I'm an idealist.)
This is a great discussion and like it has been stated before I love that we are all so polite and respectful about a sensitive topic. There is a lot of great information and opinions in here. 🙂

I am basically FOR. i live on the island of maui, where meth and oxy are both a huge problem, especially for young people and their families. i don't see mj as a problem. but that doesn't mean that it can't be abused, but it's just like anything, use in moderation. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif

I'm also for marijuana. Basically I don't understand how it can be construed into something that anyone deserves to be arrested and jailed over. There are plenty of violent and sinister things people should be arrested for, but I do not believe smoking a doobie is one of them. There are perfectly legal stores everywhere that can sell enough alcohol to quite literally kill people, and everyone is ok with that. Cigarettes are filled with additives and toxins, are physically addictive, have been completely proven to cause cancer, and it's ok for them to be sold and consumed. But consumption of something that grows naturally, can be used for medicinal purposes and non-violent (generally) recreational purposes, and where an overdose is essentially impossible, has to be punishable by legal force. Whether or not someone chooses to consume (smoke, eat, drink, or otherwise) marijuana is not really the issue for me. We should have the freedom to choose what goes into our bodies. What I care about is that there are many good people who are put in jail just because they enjoyed marijuana. Lives have been ruined for what I consider to be a less than appropriate reason for such consequences. I'm all for any new legislation, decriminalization or legalization, for that reason.

I'm all for!!! I smoke it regularly since a young teenager for medicinal (best thing for insonia, depression, lack of apetite, anxiety, etc) and recreational purpuses (surely much better than alcohol!!) … my favorite plant! 😉

I saw a comment that included hot-knives! Lol, for anyone interested, spoons work better, your dope doesn't fall off as easily!
Beyond that I wanted to add that I love to stretch while stoned. 🙂 I am more relaxed and therefore can push farther without injury or discomfort. Also, I find it less boring. If you smoke anyway you should totally try it!

Apost was just put up on OCMA regarding studies with cannabinoids and curing cancer, so of course I started looking for the research. This was the first article I found. Published in 2005 but the original research was done in 1975…yeah, read that again 1975. So we have studies that have shown marked reduction in cancer from THC and yet we still are not even considering this plant as alternative medicine.

If you are a geek like me or just want your mind blown, google Cannabinoids and cancer. It kinda makes me sick.

I'm pro-green! I live in California where it's legal for medicinal uses and am a medicinal user myself as well. I have a stressful job & some anxiety issues (in addition to lockjaw & horrible cramps) so it really helps me a ton to be able to come home after work (I NEVER ingest on or before my job) take a few hits out the bong & just chill for a bit. I always have random things going through my head so its difficult for me to just relax and not be running lists & ideas back & forth. I find that certain types/strains have different effects on different people. Some strains/types make me very sleepy and tired (good for before bed!) while other actually help energize me. This being said, I do not smoke cigarettes (the smell makes me sick), I drink very little, don't ingest caffine, and don't take prescription drugs. Marijuana is my own way of both dealing with my mental & physical pain in addition to helping me lead a healthier lifestyle by not ingesting chemicals from prescription & non-prescription drugs.

It's all politics. The goverment doesn't care whether it helps or not. Hemp is far more useful that lumber, so they want it to stay illegal.

I am on the fence with this one! I have seen the adverse effects after years of using on a lot of people even in my own family, the mental health system is unable to cope with the amount of people who need help for issues that have come about through not just marijuana smoking but all the other drugs as well, there is enough medical evidence to show the mental damage pot can cause and long term health issues, but each to their own we all have freedom to choose I choose not to firstly because it’s against the law secondly because I loathe any form if mind altering matter, but this is just my own thoughts based on my observations studies and research !

Hmm- I have admitted to many people even my mormon family THC saved my life.
Story: I only did pills and stolen Rx when I was young (my choice of… enjoyment if I have to admitted choose(to this day)) I never ingested nicotine, alcohol, thc (mormon family -nothing available, easily noticeable if did). When I was 22 yo I was 98 pounds (I'm 5'9") had a handful of emotional problems. When I left home I took my first alcoholic drink, didn't care for it but drank anyway, along with drinking at bars I tried smoking- I LOVE cigarette smoking (I have quit, I hate e-cigs that didn't help me at all).
Long story short: I met up with someone and I smoked weed. I was…. numb enough to forget about my food/body image hang ups to eat. I smoked street and Rx weed and ate it (think that was the best along with tea for me) I hate the high – I'm an upper person. But THC really saved my life to eat and be progressive for myself.
I haven't smoked in years, I hate the smoke smell, the high, too much of an effect when I eat it.
I will always stand on the side of research. I believe researching it more and letting it be legal for those who want to ingest it -like tobacco and alcohol it should be.
I also want a device for smokers to exhale in so I don't have to get "contact headaches" aka "contact high" I wish I enjoyed it as much as my friends do at get togethers. But neurochemistry is different for everyone.

Paunobs, can you please cite some examples of the research that shows this? Not being a wench here but I have not seen any of this with the exception of the one that was talked about earlier in this thread. BTW, I do have the full text of that earlier article if anyone is interested. I am having issues understanding it though but I was just glossing over it at lunch.

its my 5th day without smoking, i am very into stopping now, i keep myself busy, it s hard because my boyfriend works in the west , I am basically a housewife home alone. It also give me "creativity" and patience to sew and design the clothes i make (in my head i guess)
I start my pole classes next monday and I want to be 100% in shape for my ladies giving them the best i can
I almost bought some today but I went to rollerblade instead, its only 5 days so far but to me, it means a lot, I am very addicted , not ashamed of admitting it , it s the first step
So the pole keeps me away from the bad stuff, and its my main motivation! Tomorrow will be 6 days, and the day after a week , SO I CAN DO THIS!!
