"Know Thyself" is the ancient Greek aphorism.  There are those who have abused alcohol, food, debt, facebook, World of Warcraft and hundreds of other things to the detriment of their families.  By knowing yourself you will know the decisions you have to make when coming into contact with potentially harmful situations, unique to you.  Despite the fact that online games have caused parents to ignore their children until they starved to death http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/mar/05/korean-girl-starved-online-game online games are still legal, as they should be.

In some parts it is easy, in some not so much.  Every county agency is different as is every state.  In Cleveland I hear almost every day of some sort of abuse by a parent and it is their 4th time of being caught and that the social worker just kept checking off their chart.  If you show that you have tried to turn your life around they will give you back your children.  In rural areas now it is different.  My girlfriend was walking out of a store and there was construction going on in the parking lot  and a dozer was sitting in the lot.  Her son, being obsessed with construction vehicles, pulled away from her and ran towards the dozer.  She grabbed him up and he threw a FIT, screaming and crying and trying to get back to the dozer.  Few hours later she gets a knock on her door…2 police officers.  They had gotten a call and wanted to see her son RIGHT NOW.  He was down for a nap and she did not want to wake him.  They threatened arresting her for reported abuse and possible kidnapping.

I also have grown up with abuses in my family, but I have learned that the only one responsible for that behavior is the person who is abusing the substance.  I am waiting for the day that we get regulated on how long we can be out in the sun.  They are already pushing the HPV vaccine on our daughters and now our sons without any long term studies.  Just beacuse it is legal does not mean more people are going to choose to smoke.

I am so grateful that vaccination is not mandatory in my country. My kids will not receive that (I am still suffering the effects from 2 of the 3 shots that I had) Wow that is pretty full on about the police arriving at the door!! At least there was follow up. That is what is lacking here with known cases of abuse and neglect, and drug use of parents.
