Muscle pain after intensive invert practice?!
Posted by Saviki on September 2, 2012 at 1:16 pmI am sufferring from muscle pain on my right lateral side of the trunk and the pain radiated to the muscle/ligaments under the scapular after intensive invert practices. It hurts especially when I turned on bed or got up & even when deep breathing and coughing…. Is anyone know how to relieve pain or any stretching exercises that I can do? Thanks!

Try some Motrin or Aleve, any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication will help with pain and any swelling to the area. Don't take these if you have any bleeding disorders though. Honestly, it sounds like to me you may have a rib subluxation based on your symptoms. I get these frequently and they suck. There's really no way to fix it unless you get your back manipulated by a osteopathic physician. I've heard that certain yoga positions can coax it back into place but I've never tried it.
If it truly is muscle pain, try the arched cat. Where you get on your hands and knees and stick your butt out, pull your spine toward the floor and get a deep stretch. Then arch up like a cat and round your back. This stretch is particularly helpful for those with back pain.

Thanks maklis:) you explained so well and comprehensively ! It’s most painful around my ribs…… What if I leave it untreated ? Will the pain subside or will it affect my pole practice in future? I’m worried..
I tried the arched cat already, it doesnt help much… Actually I tried to stretch different different parts of my back, but seems not really work at all. The pain is from deeper ” muscles” or deep inside the body….

You might not have necessarily subluxed a rib–my guess is that you sprained the intercostal muscle (the muscles between the ribs that assist with breathing). Make sure you ice it 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off for the first couple days. And rest it–no inverts or extreme poses for a few days if possible. Then ease into things and make sure you're properly warmed up next time you try those darned inverts 🙂
Hope that helps

I know a thing or two about it because I've gotten them before and I love to know what's going on with my body. Haha! Poledreamer is correct, I'm not there to physically examine your back so I'm simply making an educated guess as to your condition. You'll have to see your physician to get any type of diagnosis.
But to answer your questions, no, there is minimal risk to leaving it untreated. Your body will adjust, but probably not in the way you want. You will most likely have some shifting to accomodate the subluxed rib. Your muscles will spasm and it might pull other things out of alignment. That was my issue. I had a physician adjust my back and I actually had three subluxed ribs. I also have scoliosis so my spine had shifted some and my pelvis was off too.
I have to believe that I had the subluxed ribs for some period of time. It mostly started to bother me when I would practice my shoulder mounts because there was a lot of pressure on that area with the pole. So I think the pain will subside. Please don't be worried though! Rib subluxations are rather benign and super simple to fix. Just some pressure and they ease back into place. You could try the yoga moves and see if it works for you? But if the pain persists, please see your doc. 🙂

Both of your information are helpful ! Lol. At least I got some picture of my condition. I'm going to try both. I also think i may sprain my intercoastal muscle too at start, but it is already the 5th day since I got the pain. That make me worried that's not simplily muscle pain and I want to get on pole soon! But I didn't try icing yet, I was too busy these days and back home late, fell asleep immediately after shower 😛
So I will try icing and seek help from professionals asap. Just to make sure it got fixed properly. It's happy to hear that mkalis you fixed yours, seems it bothered you so much in the past.> <
I serached the yoga positions mkalis you mentioned, and its pretty simple and surely do no harm to try them! And one of my collague is really good at Yoga, I can ask for her assistance!
You girls are lovely and helpful!

Good luck and I hope you get better soon! Definitely seek medical help if it doesn't get better in the next couple of days, so that you aren't having to suffer through the pain. And please keep us posted on your recovery 🙂

I had a very similar thing going on with my back about 18 months ago which actually persisted for months. I believe I injured it inverting incorrectly perhaps with too much determination but not enough strength. Nothing seemed to fix it unitil I saw a trigger point theraphist. The treatment hurt and I had to do a lot of stretching but I was so happy when the pain was finally gone and I could train again. I hope your pain is resolved much sooner than mine. Practice your strengthening so when youre ready to train again your strength can help protect you from injury and good luck!!

I consulted the Chinese medicine Chiropractor ( we Chinese do believe they work) , he said there is 10 degree scolicosis at my thoracic spine and he corrected it. Really hurt! There is a bit relieve of the muscle near the spine, but I still have severe pain around my ribs and scapular…. Plan to see doctor tonight, to get some medicine if there is inflammation …. Hope it can help a bit… Cause I have to walk very slowly to avoid pain …

A similar thing happened with me, and the doctor told me to give it a few weeks rest (no pole!) and take some NSAID’s. 3 weeks later I’m back on the pole, my muscles don’t hurt anymore, and I feel stronger than ever after a rest. Hope this helps.

Its happy to hear that you can get on pole so soon! I have been resting and take medicine for a week but still painful…. I’m wondering what happen to me… Hope the pain will erase and can get on pole again a week later just like you!
