Music and pole in studios/competitions
Hey guys! I had a class where we were talking about music in fitness classes and the topic of music came up, and how people are cracking down on using unlicensed music in fitness classes. I guess this is why stuff like Zumba has its own music and they teachers kind of sign up for the right to use that music? Don’t quote me on that….
How does this licensing issue work for pole competitions and stuff? especially since the video is typically shared. Are those competitions paying out for using those songs? In studio it makes sense that its too small of a scale to really crack down on music use versus like a fitness chain, but we see all kinds of music in competition and performances.
Just wondering out loud since there are so many studio owners and professionals on this site 🙂

I am on my phone or I would link posts. There has been quite a lot of discussion here on the forum regarding this. If you search music licensing or opening a studio you should get quite a few hits.

I live in Germany and the authority in charge of this here, GEMA, are quite strict, unreasonable, and annoying.
Half the videos from the Poleranking yt channel, and a lot of other pole videos are blocked on yt from Germany, and you get the usual message “this video is not available in your country due to copyright blablabla”. It does not even remove the audio only, the entire vid is blocked. -

What about regular radio? Or a youtube Playlist? Or my own private CD collection? There are so many ways of accessing music nowadays. I don’t understand how a regulatory body would even catch you?

Hmmm this is all really interesting. So I’m assuming the comps was registered/licensed by one of these companies too. Thanks chem! Don’t know why I didn’t think to just search it >_

From my understanding there is a special license you can get for competitions.

Regulatory bodies just assume that you are playing music at your studio. All they need to do is search your business license and then send you a letter…..this is very easily done with computers. It is not a time thing in any way. The burden of proof is on you.
