My First Injury! How to Pass the Time??!
Posted by AnnVann on January 28, 2014 at 7:24 pmHi, everyone! I’ve been poling since the beginning of October and have my first injury – slight muscle tear. in left pectoral area. My doctor said to let it rest for two weeks. 🙁 I know I’m being an impatient baby, but I guess misery loves company… What injuries have you guys had, and how did you pass the time, lol?

I had a broken foot (top) and for a while I could not do much of anything. After I was “on the mend” I practiced floor work and did sit ups. I was still wearing the funny shoe so I wasnt healed all the way. Just have to be careful not to re-injure. Feel better!

Within two months of poling i have now injured the tendons in both elbows. My dr. Has sentenced me to four weeks of rest. :). Unfortunately, I began at a studio with a “by any means necessary” motto instead of teaching proper form. I was already a very very very slow learner so it has been frustrating. However, the upside is it has forced me to focus on getting to a good studio versus just any studio. Also I would recommend Venna’s lessons. I started Veena’s lessons today and there is so much I can work on while healing.

I have had a shoulder injury (strained rotator cuff) for the past 3 weeks. I went easy on it for a little while until it felt better, and instead of easing back into my routine, I got over-zealous and went back into full force a couple days ago (you can see evidence of that in my videos) and it aggravated my injury all over again-so I am back to square A with recovery.
My advice: Don’t let the injury slow your progress. Do everything you can do EXCEPT anything that will require use of your injured muscle. That means you will have full reign over the other 95% of your body-use it.
Strengthen your legs and core, do flexibility training, work on fluidity (do not hold yourself on the pole-just dance WITH and AROUND it). Dance in general, without the pole-learn to emote music. Practice floorwork.
Use this time to educate yourself about proper form. Educate yourself about exercises that strengthen the muscles you injured. Strengthen muscles you normally never strengthen (wrists, forearms). Stretch muscles you never stretch.
Veena’s lessons are great for this. In fact, I’ve use her lessons almost everyday while I’ve been injured and I’m getting way more out of them than my studio class package right now.
If you haven’t noticed, this is A LOT of options, and a lot of work you can set out for yourself. Unless you have a very serious injury that requires bed rest, you will notice that this is not a set-back.
For me, it is only difficult because of my mindset. I “can’t” work on some of the crazier, more advanced inverted moves I was working on prior to my injury. But you know what-if I got injured, it’s probably because I need to build a stronger foundation first.
I highly recommend Veena’s lessons along with a studio. She emphasizes safety and proper form-and is a great tool for home polers. I will have Veena’s lessons until I reach a level of experience where they are ingrained into me. Hope I helped. Good luck

OMG hey there annlambertvannoy4449 I just saw your post! Would you believe it if I told you that was my very first injury? Exactly the same! Ouch! Left breast pec muscle. PLEASE REST FOR TWO WEEKS! Even if you are feeling better. It was very painful for me and happened last spring. I’m fine now and you will be too if you rest.
