  • My class attendance is declining :-(

Posted by Celestial on June 28, 2013 at 1:54 pm

I started teaching in January and my classes were always either full or almost full, I have 4 poles for students to learn on. Lately there’s been a decrease in attendance, my classes are every Monday and Friday. The classes are 2 hours long and I teach a routine to a new song every month or so and my students always tell me how great of a workout they’re getting and that they can’t wait until the next class. Sometimes it’s a group of friends that come together and if one can’t make it, then they all can’t make it. I’m not sure if it’s the weather and people would rather be out enjoying it than working out or if some people have a hard time with class and just gave up. I thought my students were as enthusiastic and motivated as i was but i guess not…. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

People tend to take a lot of vacations in the summer time. Mondays and Fridays will both be affected by people taking long weekends. Also, January is a very popular time for people to begin fitness routines due to New Year's resolutions, so your classes may have been unusually busy then. Gyms typically experience a surge of business in the winter, and then as the weather warms up, people tend to make more excuses not to go – either they have other plans, they get bored with working out in general, or they haven't seen the results they wanted.

If everyone keeps giving your classes rave reviews, then I would chalk it up to seasonality. You can also chat with other fitness instructors to see if they experience a similar issue around this time of year. I'm sure your classes are great!

I been teaching for 2 years and summer has always been a slow time due to vacation and people outside for the warm weather, it will pick back up again in the fall

I don’t think it has anything to do with you or your teaching. I would love to attend more pole classes than I do. I live an hour away from my studio and I work 12 hour nights so its hard to get to a lot of them. Also my instructor also talks about how classes are less full in summer at my studio. I remember the same thing occurred when I used to go to Zumba classes also.

I currently work at 3 different gym facilities, plus know many other owners of studios. This time of year is tough for fitness, memberships and classes are down across the board. Usually things pick back up as school starts. People dont take as many vacations, they get a schedule going again, and some need to lose the summer "indulgece". January is the "good time" for fitness since loads of people make resolutions and they want to "try something new". You will probably see another decline around the halloween/thanksgiving/christmas times as well.

I own a studio in CA summer is hard awesome weather beach time etc – there is always a surge before summer to get suit ready and after the Christmas holidays and after taxes lol things will or should pick up again in fall … 2 hrs is a long class – have you thought about a 1.5 hr class also what times are your classes – that’s key too!

Same thing here! Summer time seems to be my slowest time of the year which is odd because on cape cod summer time is the busiest! But i thinK because of that my girls are working more and spending that extra time at the beach. Night claases are key for me, i actually just changed my achschedule to later classes. 6/6:30 and 7/7:30…classes are one hour long. Weekends i never get people signed up for…again. thats beach time;) it picks up in the fall. Hope it pocks up for everyone! I keep telling my students use it or loose it. Some dont come in for weeks at a time and dont understand that you wont progress if you dont keep up with it,

I’ve noticed that class time trend fluctuates every few months. I have a good communication with my clients and just ask them when is a good time for them. We just move the classes around a little every few months so they stay full.

Thanks for posting. I just started teaching about a month ago and have been trying develop a client base. No real owners in my area willing to mentor, so I’ve been winging it. Never thought it may be due to the season.
