My poor hammy 😔
Posted by Aquarian Air on May 30, 2015 at 12:34 pmI slipped and fell into splits yesterday which I am no where near flexible enough for and now my hammy is screaming at me, I can’t even sit on it as its so tender. I’m wondering if foam rolling would be a good idea and if so how much rolling should I do? I’ve never had a muscle injury quite this bad so I’m a little worried. I had to work right after it happened but I rested it as much as I could while I was there and I had an Epsom salt bath as soon as I got home, any other tips and advice to help me heal properly would be greatly appreciated 💜 the worst part is that I’ve already paid for routines class in Boise tomorrow 😢

Ahh, I’m really sorry to hear that! I know how horrible it feels to have a strained hamstring!
My best advice is rest. DO NOT stretch that hamstring! Do your best to keep it relaxed, to be gentle with it, and just take it easy.
I know it’s really frustrating, but a hamstring injury can take a long time to heal. These are muscles we use every day, just to walk and to bend! Sitting used to be very aggravating for my hamstring- sometimes, it would ache no matter what I did! But, over time it settled down, and I can stretch them again.
Listen to your body- if it hurts, don’t do it! Your hamstring needs care, and giving it awesome care will help it heal a lot quicker! -
💌Hope this sounds positive : Growth through restriction. I had to recently meet this lesson because I like to obsess a tad on things that feel good, naturally haha. Painful and fullfilling at the same time, Healing vibes to you! Rest and love will fix you up no doubt.

I wouldnt foam roll a fresh hamstring injury because it will lengthen and stretch the muscle and if there is a tear in the muscle it can make it tear more. you will probably need to rest it for a month and then gradually start rehabbing it with strengthening exercises and active flexibility exercises. I wouldnt do splits or anything like that for a while. all hamstring injuries vary so get it looked at. I had a hamstring injury that took about 6months to heal and mine was very minor. there is definitely a right and wrong way to rehab a hamstring and its good to get professional help with it. if you can take advil, that will help with initial inflammation and pain. but for now, I would definitely rest that leg as much as possible.

Magnesium salts for your bath or supplements will help, keep it elevated, get some anti inflammatory cream for muscles on it too and make an appointment to see a physiotherapist. I had a tear in mine too and I know how sore it can be get well soon.

I’m copying in a post I made a month or so ago about a hamstring injury I sustained working on splits in a yoga class. I truly hope this is not what happens to you but thought I would post it for the progression of treatment I went through at the direction of sports medicine physicians. On the positive side, it did finally heal but, man, did it take a long time.
I just wanted to post this in case it can help somebody else with a hamstring injury that just won’t heal. I injured my hamstring way up in my butt cheek where the muscle attaches working on splits in a yoga class. It took 14 months to heal–I actually had kind of given up on it ever healing. When it happened I assumed it was a pulled muscle and gave it six weeks of relative rest with no improvement. Then saw my doc who ordered physical therapy which included strengthening as well as some myofascial release and electrical stim. No change, back to doc, MRI done showing no tear. Doc sent me to his partner who did some more myofascial release and acupuncture and he attaches electrical stim to the acupuncture needles. No change. This second doc then did two injections of prolotherapy, which is injecting dextrose into the area to irritate it so it will heal itself. Three weeks after the second injection it started to get a little bit better, which it hadn’t done for a year. Around then I also started getting Muscle Activation Technique (MAT) therapy ([muscleactivation.com)] as recommended by the second doc as well. I just noticed about two weeks ago that it’s finally gone. I believe prolotherapy was probably the biggest reason and the MAT probably helped too. I’m continuing the MAT for a few other aches and pains that won’t heal and they think they’ll be able to help my back flexibility (or lack thereof) as well.
I know from some previous posts that there are many of us with hamstring injuries so hopefully this will help someone.
And this is the only community who will understand how happy I am to be able to genuinely work on flexibility again!

Today is much better, my range of motion is already improving but even though my friend is over for a pole date I haven’t touched it, the urge is strong though!! You all are so helpful and I feel as though I’m already bouncing back from it, I’m gonna check out that MAT though for sure! 💜💜
