Hi guys, I need some advice. I still consider myself a beginner. I have not progressed the way that I would like. Anyhow I know one of my major problems is that I am still holding onto the pole way too tight and can not get to the point loosening my grip. It’s like I am still holding on for dear life. (oh my goodness) I am not spinning on the pole like I want to while using static. Due to first learning on the spinning mode, I refuse to practice on spin mode and I have now changed to a studio which primarily uses static. It’s like I am starting all over again because the moves that I can do on spin mode is absolutely impossible on static and it is depressing.

I need some advice. How did you guys learn not to hold on so tight. I know it is a learned and comfort thing but any advice you can give me will be appreciated. I am wondering if I am the only person having this problem. It sure does suck.

Well, thanks guys. I am looking forward to the responses.

Go into a pole hold but lift youth feet like you are kneeling and then slowly loosen your grip until you land on the floor on your knees. This will train you on how much you need to hope and how much you need to grip. You want to be able to do a controlled slide to the ground without smashing your knees on the ground.

Thank you so much Chem. I have this same problem and have not been able to figure it out. I will try this technique as well.

If it’s mainly spinning that you have an issue with, this is what I have my students do when they have “death grip”.

Instead of doing a baseball hold, do a c cup grip. Meaning, put your thumb on the same side as the rest of your fingers, you will not be able to do death grip this way. Doing this will give you the feeling you need to figure out how hard to do it with a baseball grip. This worked every single time I told my girls to do it this way!

Thank you guys. I will try the techniques you’ve stated. This is a good start. I hope it works for me. 🙂

I have this issue on my weaker hand. I guess I over grip to compensate for the weakness. I’m gonna try some of these too 🙂
