I have booked myself my first gig for a non-pole audience, it is at a mardi gras themed fundraiser at a gay bar in Chicago 🙂 I am pretty excited but I have a few things working against me that I am getting kinda nervous about! I will be dancing off to the side in the background go-go style and I haven't been poling as much as I should be because I'm planning a wedding and started a business, so my stamina is crap. So dancing for ten minutes at a time is pretty much out of the question, I am thinking of just doing 3 songs an hour. There will be a DJ so I have to dance to whatever he plays and I won't know ahead of time. So I will be freestyling, and my stage limits the moves I can do plus I'm injured so that is limiting me also. I am nervous I will run out of moves or people will be bored when they see me use some of the same moves again but there's only so much I can really do in the given circumstances. The base of the pole is pretty small so no floorwork really although I am short so I could probably get away with it. I am injured so no splits dammit. I will try to get my bad side down comfortably by then (I can on a good day) or at least cheat it. The gig is next Friday the 8th in the evening.

I'm also worried about getting too sweaty and falling off the pole! Which is kind of crazy. I hope that doesn't happen! Is there anything I should do differently than I would in a pole showcase? It's at a gay bar so luckily I will be having a (hopefully) non judgemental audience so that's helpful. I am going to try to get some good stage practices in this week so I feel confident with it, it's a 50mm which I am not used and I just bought the stage about 2 weeks ago so I haven't been on it much. Hopefully everything goes well…!!! eeek!

U will do fine. Just get up there and freestyle. Any pole moves are impressive to the general public. Plus u have great stage appeal!

I too, have a performance coming up at the very beginning of May and I'm nervous also! The only thing you can do is lots of practices and just stay nice and stretched. Its hard to sometimes hide nervousness I know, just don't let it stiffen your moves ;-). It sucks not knowing what music they are going to play but the big plus side is that it is in a bar that is going to be mardi gras themed so you know it will be dance style/booty poppin' music that is danceable to some extent at least. Haha. Make sure you bring some grip aids or something like that. and also maybe you would feel more at ease if you brought someone along to the gig with you for support!  hope some of this helps! Good luck!

Dancing at a bar is so totally different than even for a showcase.  Generally the music is so loud and the lights are so low that it is easy to get lost in the music.  I have also found that the alt lifestyle is so much more open to performance art that they could care less about pointed toes or perfect form.  These are the people who are used to burlesque performers and drag queens.

My friend. Your personality, alone will carry you. I have watched you freestyle and you rock it. I know you feel like there are many things against you now, but I'm sure that once you are there, you will relax and get into it. Have you ever used Dirty Girl Poletice for your hands? It really is fabulous for the sweat factor. If you don't have any, you can borrow mine. I can pass it to you on Friday when you drop off my cupcakes!
