  • Need some help with hands during invert

Posted by Wcox on August 4, 2014 at 10:02 pm

I am comfortable doing inverts but I am starting to do other moves that require me to remove my hands. I am finding it difficult to get my hands out from my thighs once I have inverted. I can do it but I am guessing that there are some tips out there that all of you wonderful people may have that could help me out? Thank you in advance 🙂

it really depends on what move you are trying to do after you invert, it might be easier to help you if we know what move you are doing. like an iverted crucifix, Gemini, etc. are your hands stuck between your legs and that’s why you find it hard to remove them? or do you not feel secure and that’s why you cant remove them? Hopefully we can help you figure it out.

Are you doing basic invert/x-grab or v-legs/chopper? Am sure someone with better advice will shortly appear but just wanted to check what you were doing as different techniques apply…

An example is when I did an inverted crucifix today, getting my hands out was an issue. As I mentioned, I can get them out but I was looking for some advice on how I can get them out more easily. It doesn’t seem fluid and natural. Any suggestions would be great!

it’s kind of hard to say for sure without seeing it. but my guess is to make sure your knees are above your hands. if you invert and you are sagging a little bit on the pole, your knees will almost trap your hands making it hard to remove them. once you are inverted, keep your legs and hands on the pole and pull your self up higher on the pole so that your knees are clear. you can try practicing this on the ground. lay beside the pole with the pole in your armpit. hands are holding the pole as if you were going to invert. push your hips up into a bridge position. hook your outside leg just like a regular invert, bring the inside leg up too. you should be in an inverted position with your legs on the pole but your upper body is still on the ground. while holding on tightly with your hands, practicing pulling your butt up higher on the pole. nothing crazy, no climbing, just pulling your butt up a few inches. get used to doing this from the ground. when you get it. you can do this up the pole while inverted. this will help give you a clearance for your hands. not sure if that helps, its just a guess

Yes definitely HIPS UP, your hands want to end up by your pants, not halfway up your thighs.
2 things: 1 work on the abs to get the hips higher (TUCK tightly before tipping backwards), 2, work on the shoulders/arms so you don’t drop out to straight arms, your arms will still be slightly bent even when you are completely inverted.

Yes, you need to make sure you’re strong enough to get the hips up high. Also if you haven’t already, try working on the inverted crucifix from a reverse handstand, to help you feel more secure with your legs. You can work on releasing the hands from the floor too at the side of the pole, then you will know how high up the knees and hips have to be.

I agree definitely with hips high, it’s something I’ve had to really make sure I do especially when you come to getting your leg over for a knee hold. Also make sure you don’t start your invert with hands too high, before you invert maybe bring your hands a bit lower, then they will naturally be lower when your upside down. And before you really squeeze for your crucifix change the position of your hands so it feels comfortable. It’s just practice though to get what feels right. Duno if that makes sense lol and I’m only a beginner myself, it’s just my experience x good luck x
