    Well, here's the deal…

I hadn't been dancing for too long (about 2 months) before I had to move, and didn't have my pole or any access to a studio for about 6 months. But in those 2 months that I was dancing, I really felt like I was getting somewhere. I never had much trouble with any of the spins or holds I had learned in my classes, other than just needing to work up a bit more strenth to control them better. I still felt fluid, and like I was dancing.

Anyway, since I moved and didn't have a pole to play on, I decided to focus on strength and flexibility, and hoped that I'd be in a good place once I did finally get back on the pole. And I have noticed a lot of improvement in both areas! So I was really excited last night when I finally got my pole back and put up, and was ready to go. But I tried just a few basic spins, and even those felt wrong. It was really discouraging. I am not even sure how to properlly describe it. I just felt uncoordinated, and like I had forgotten pretty much everything I knew.

So now, I just need some advice. Kinds words. Whatever. There are no pole studios anywhere near me. I'll be signing up for lessons on here as soon as I get internet at my house all sorted out. But I'm just worried that without classes I'm going to keep getting discouraged and lose interest.

This may be attributed to your move and being in a new space.  Where youa re now, does it feel comfortable to you or is your life still in a state of turmoil?  Some of us need safe and comforting to dance, some of us need turmoil.  You may be concentrating too much on getting back to pole/dance instead of feeling the moment.  I know that it is really hard for me to just dance at the studio but I can at home or at the club.  I know women who can only dance and be free at their studio.  You need to find what it is that makes you feel different about the two places where you poled that is coming through in your movement now.

I wouldn't worry too much. It was only your first try back… and you did just move which is stressful. Some days are just not pole days, no matter how much we want them to be. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif  I think you should start fresh next practice with some music you love and no expectations. Good luck!

I have moved a lot!! Each time, I either feel a little lost or super happy when I put my pole up in its new surroundings, as Chem mentioned. Right now, I still don't feel 100% at home in my new studio space and I have been here for about 5 months.

It seems, for me anyway, as I said before, the first few times back on the pole can either feel amazing or confusing and depressing. It was after the move to our most recent place, that, for the first time ever…I have found myself just staring at the poles wondering what I should do…that NEVER has happened to me, ever!!!! But it did pass. It did scary me!! lol So, I guess I'm just saying it can happen to anyone, you're not alone. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

I've moved a lot, too! My pole always manages to follow me though (I'm quite adamant that there must be SOMEWHERE to put it!).

Moving can really change things up, and some people don't take that change very easily! So, be nice to yourself and give yourself a bit of time to settle in… not too much, but just a bit!

Figure out what the best parts are for a workout for you- do you like the freestyle dancing, working on new moves, or is it the strength and flexibility you enjoy? Try to emphasize those in your routine, so that you feel a bit more inclined to go and do it all, with the reward of your favourite in there!

And, one of the bigger ones that my boyfriend keeps telling me (that I am slowly listening to!) is this: Say to yourself "I WANT to dance," rather than "I SHOULD dance." Makes things less of a chore, and more of what you actually intended it to be; a want, a hobby, something fun to help you feel good. Sometimes just changing what you say to yourself in those little ways make a huge difference!

And, otherwise, you're used to the idea of having a class- so, make up a class on your own! Set aside some specific time, and tell people "Oh, sorry, I can't do that thing- I have a class at that time." Seriously. You are the master of your own time, and if you've decided you like the routine of having a class once a week, keep it up!

I like to work on getting my pole room pretty and inspiring. Not necessarily fancy- money doesn’t always allow- but I like to get it clean and surround myself with my costumes, pictures, past choreography written down and printed out. Then I just spend time in there listening to music, getting the feel of the space and doing a few simple spins or just stretching even. Then boom! A song comes on! I get an idea- even if for just one spin for one part of the song- and it all works itself out. I also dance like a fool to songs that totally don’t work and make a complete joke out of myself 🙂 It’s cool. I do this for myself and no one is watching 🙂

You are all, of course, right. I went in last night after ballet and just put on some music. I still wasn't really feeling it in the beginning, but I eventually started feeling a little more comfortable. Lost myself for a couple seconds at a time.

AND, as I didn't have any alcohol I used some vinegar to clean my pole for the first time, and that seems to have finally cleared off the last of the factory coating. So now I can finally climb it! That did wonders for my confidence and happiness. 🙂

LaRouge, I really like your idea, too. I think if I just start spending some more time in my new pole space and get used to it, I'll start feeling a lot better in there. I'll try hanging out in there tonight after yoga and see what happens. 🙂
