I keep trying to get my hubby to do it too! Good for you and enjoy!

I've started attempting handsprings, but it's just not clicking yet. I'm either not going low enough, or not keeping myself close to the pole, and it's mainly through fear of slamming my face into the ground!
I'm having loads of fun with it though, that's the main thing.

@Frowning, lol, that is b/c the handspring is an advanced move. I tried it every day for a month or two and then I was able to get up into a ball. Once you get that point, try holding it and you can extend your legs into a pencil or v. But this is a move you may not master so quickly. It isn't like a spin or even a climb. It takes practice and patience. Good luck!

Oh yes, I’m under no illusion that it’s an advanced move, but I want to put in a good few attempts each session as I gain both strength and confidence in the other moves i’m learning. It may take me months of practice, but I’ll get there 🙂
-
I practiced it 5-10x a day for atleast 5 days to get it in the time I did. I also needed to bring my lower hand even lower b/c I have longer arms and legs. You may need to do the same. Keep trying!

Thanks, and good idea! I’ll post a bud when I finally nail it, sometime in the summer I expect 😉
-
Better yet, post a vid of your attempts now. You may get some tips that will help you get it before summer. 😉

No laughing I promise! You can have a look at my half-handspring vid if you like…some of those are funny!

Welcome!
From the pole dancers you mentioned liking, it sounds like the moves you are looking for come more from Chinese pole (like in the circus) than dance pole. I don't know where you live, but you should look and see if there's anywhere you can take lessons- there shouldn't be a problem with you being a guy. I take Chinese pole lessons occasionally at the New England Center for Circus Arts in Brattleboro, VT.
As for conditioning, check out Legend's video on strength training for on-pole conditioning, and off-pole any kind of strength training or weightlifting will help. Also, check out Veena's lessons for wrist and forearm strength, which is often an issue initially.

Thanks Elektra, oddly enough I just (with Little Vix) did some of Legend's strength training from her video. Vix could do a lot more than me, but I'm seeing improvements from when we started it last Monday.
I'll also check out the wrist and forearm strength lessons, I definitely need to improve on that. As for Chinese pole, unfortunately I live about an hour away from Birmingham (UK), which is where the closest class I can find is.

He's improving super-quickly guys. His spins are getting really graceful, the beatings have meant that he points his toes more (j/k about the beatings. Mostly) and his strength is improving enormously.
Today we'll be doing more strength training, and I've an idea that might help with The Fear associated with handsprings, so we'll try that too.
Plus, F, you need to do press-ups on your fingertips. It'll improve your wrist strength. And get yourself to my yoga class ;o)
We'll get some more videos up soon. And I might put up a few of my own.
-
Thanks Vix, very sweet of you to say that.
I would come to yoga if I didn't have a ton of other things to do/pay for, but we'll see how the next few months go.
You should definitely post up some of your vids here, you've rocked in some awesome moves recently.

Frowning, If you're still working on getting over that fear of handsprings/cartwheels why don't you try a gymnastics cartwheel outside in a grassy area. It is a similar movement to the pole handspring/cartwheel in that you need to drop your head towards the ground, so that your legs can go up and over. Try it a few times, they don't have to be beautiful, graceful, or perfect, but it will let you get the main points of the movement without fear of hurting yourself. 🙂
