New pole – feeling the difference!
Posted by Allgold78 on June 3, 2014 at 6:39 amHello! I started my love affair with pole dancing at the beginning of April and I’ve been lurking around here for a while and thought I’d get involved and join the chat now I have a vague idea of what I’m talking about!
So my new pole arrived yesterday and is pride of place in my front room (for a short while!). I love it – all magnificent and shiny. So why does it feel weird?? I’ve been learning in a studio and will happily fling myself at the poles there, but at home I feel like something is restricting me. I’ve got plenty of room so I’m not sure what it is. Does everyone feel like this or just me???

Hi! I felt (and still sometimes feel) the same way. I was convinced the pole would fall down for the first week (lol) but even when that passed, I find it harder to get started on a pole session, I push myself less and I keep well within my comfort zone at home. I find doing a really good warm up helps me feel more mentally ready and also having the TV on, weirdly. Like there are other people around or something, which makes me feel more inclined to have a go! I think I’m just the sort of learner who likes being in a group with a teacher more than studying alone. Maybe you’re the same?

Hmmm, maybe. It’s gotta be something in my head somewhere. I’ve got confidence in the pole and it’s ability to stay put so it’s got to be something else. Maybe a bit of time and practice will sort it out.

Hi. I know exactly what your talkin about……I did great in classes for 4 months or so, was progressing well, so I bought a home pole. A shiny new xpole tg 50mm. I bought 50 cause that’s what we used in class…….the poles in the studio are brass and slow spinning, specially made for the owner. I couldn’t wait to jump on my new pole and show my hubby…..lol…needless to say I sucked in a bad way……I couldn’t even do a split grip spin on this pole.. 🙁 after practice it improved, but never as comfy as the studio pole…….I eventually got a brass from platinum stages because it was a closer match to the studio and I luv it…..

Aaarrggh I am the same!! I think I saw another post a while back with people discussing the same thing, we are not alone in home-pole-itis =p
I am rubbish poling at home I don’t know why!! I never have as good a session as in class, it’s so frustrating. I don’t push myself as hard, my grip often fails, I just want to jump on pole without faffing around with a warm up , i get bored doing conditioning , everything seems to hurt more and I get annoyed with myself much quicker – the practice doesn’t come to a nice natural end, I give up cos I’m too fed up!! It’s such a strange thing I know I would be progressing much quicker if I could have home sessions like my classes =< I've found good music definitely helps me get into it. And what I try tell myself after every rubbish home session is that EVERYTHING helps - even If I couldn't do the simplest spins, it's all good body work in the long run =] xoxox -
Same here! In fact, I’m glad I’m not the only one who kicks himself (herself?) for being too lazy to practice outside class. Fact is, practically everything is more fun with other people around, more motivating, more encouragement, etc etc. Hell, just being in the same room with fellow polers is fun by itself.
On the other hand, having a teenage son lingering around the house for the summer isn’t helping my home practice either…

Reassuring to know that others are feeling the same then. I’ve had a rest day so I’m gonna give it another go today and hope that it’s better. I bought it to compliment the classes (be teachers pet, do lots of homework lol) so I want it to work for me. People on the videos seem to be doing a great job, and some in very small spaces, so I think I’ve just gotta suck it up and get on with it!

Pole update! I’ve had a practice session today and have to say that it felt much better. That is until I was just about to take off for a spin, realised a cupboard door was open, and almost wrapped myself around the pole in a very ugly manner! The cupboard door was nowhere near to where I might hit it but I think my brain just saw it as a danger and wouldn’t let me do it. Shut the door, carried on, and actually got some nice spins in. Woohooo!

Maybe your in a small space? I have that problem and abit restricted on spins as I sometimes whack my foot on the wall! So maybe that is at the back of your head whilst practicing.

I also have the same problem. I haven’t been pole dancing for long but I really struggle to do stuff I can do in class at home. In class, I’m more confident and feel sexier, and if something goes wrong, we just have a laugh about it. If something goes wrong at home I just get frustrated with myself. I think I’m going to hit things when I’m clearly not too, maybe we’re just used to having more space so our heads scream “OMG I’m going to hit that wall that’s 10 feet away!!”
I’m glad your doing much better with your new pole after a bit of practice, it’s motivation for me to practice more to get better too 🙂

@blondebird It’s not too small. I clear most of the furniture out so there’s nothing to hit myself on.
@shortie1509 I actually feel alot sexier at home (I’m not a small girl so need to build up the confidence to “strut” before I feel comfortable in public!). I do think it’s the space thing though. Once I put that unreasonable worry out of my head I’ll be fine. Maybe the hubby needs to build an extension for me to have a pole room in 😉 -
I’m the same, I’m not really big but I’m not stick thin either lol. At first, I was very worried about not being able to cover my body up, I have hardly any confidence at all. After the initial shock of people seeing bits like my wobbly legs, I’ve gained confidence every week. There are 4 very slim girls plus the instructor at class, and there’s me and another girl who are ‘curvy girls’. She’s a great help for my confidence, she’s abit more advanced than me so she knows what I’m going through and is very encouraging. At home I have no one to sing my praises haha.
A pole room is an amazing excuse for an extension, I hope ur hubby agrees 😀 haha
