Ahh no, it isn’t the dying spin I’m afraid! Trying to learn the, erm, technical terms 😛 To help describe, but from looking at the gallery of grips, you start off with something like the partial split grip, but more to your side as you’re stood infront of the pole? I may have to attempt a paint drawing on my laptop to try and explain as I’m not very good at this :’) haha

The problem is, you don’t actually (from what I saw and was taught) use your legs to grip or hook the pole at all? You simply fall backwards and as you do, your whole body sort of contorts around the pole in a slight spin as you end up ont he floor with your knees tucked in. Really hope this helps, trying to find it is sending me insane!

(Apologies for the spamming on this post!) but aha! I found a picture which helps me describe it! Imagine standing with one leg infront of your pole and your other leg firmly on the ground (both touching the ground) and falling back so you’re like this: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/gaqtHcOL-jw/hqdefault.jpg where you then drop and tuck your knees in as you slightly spin on the pole to twist?

-without- wrapping your legs around the pole, but rather, together on the same side as the pole as your body?

I will! I’ve found this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r51eszjhJPE&app=desktop of the dying move. It isn’t the full move, but more a broken down part of it. The exact fall she does between 0:35 and around 0:45, NOT the bit where she hooks her legs, but simply the fall. I know it’s really simple! But I literally can’t get my hips right, I lean more into the pole than actually falling back (I have no idea how I’m doing this…God help me!) my bum sort of gets stuck on the pole, and then when I’m on the floor, the damn pole is below my bum rather than on my lower back! Literally failing so much at this move! :’) I know it’s only my first lesson but everybody else managed it so easily!

It was very similar to that one! Only the legs aren’t hooked! 🙂

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kGj8kdoCFOQ The dying spin…no hook…but a bit more spin…but the feet basically stay on the ground

Sort of but she stays vertical. Where as you actually fall fully back around the pole, try the link I posted with the 10 seconds noted, as thats what I’m trying to describe. The rest of the move she does isn’t the same, but when she does it without the hook, thats what I’m trying to do. Sorry about this

    I’m picturing a move….

I feel like we called it the mermaid spin… but when I looked up mermaid spin its different.

This is the only thing I could find that is what I was thinking.. but maybe with out lifting as much?

I guess like this… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46Nc8dUmgVY but without the chair spin in the start. 🙂

Yes! That last move! Where you’re feet aren’t off the floor what so ever but just fall! She wanted us to do it froma standing still position and found it really hard to get right :/ Anyone know what the move is called? Or is it actually mermaid? As I thought mermaid actually involved you’re feet being off the floor?

Also, the pole was meant to be on my lower back? But it kept being below my bum like hers seems to be? Yet I was the only one who couldn’t do it!

I call this a swivel but who knows lol. I always teach the sitting back version where it goes to the bum instead of the lower back. It just feels more natural to me. The only way I can even get it to my lower back as you mention is to look way back at the same time which feels weird to me. It can just be your variation on the move 🙂 there’s not an absolute right or wrong in pole (unless It’s something dangerous) but I try to teach my girls to go with their natural movement which can often be incorporated say for choreography the same way the original move was planned to. But of course I hope your instructor can give you more tips for this particular version you seek – maybe a light bulb tip will come on and she will have one for you next time sometimes it takes a fresh look at it to see what will help a student. Good luck!
