So this is my first time on my own profile…..A long time ago I was trying to get my mom to see pole dance wasn’t just for prostitutes…I was 14,and she let me use her email. No matter what, she hasn’t changed her opinion. She said aerial silks were ok,though.I have no idea what to do from there….Like I know nothing about it.Do you guys have any advice on the kind to get,and rigging?

Aerial silks are really a different beast than pole. I have seen lots of cautions, and I agree, that silks are not something that you want to learn on your own. Here’s a web article that cautions about trying to learn silks on your own: http://circusedge.com/announcements/21678930210/

If you have a studio in your area that teaches them, this would be where to start. I always wanted to do silks, but there were no classes in my area until this year. So I finally got to start silks this summer.

Rigging is also more complicated than pole, and the consequences of failed rigging can be steep. That being said, I have a 12 foot outdoor rig that was made by a trapeze specialist, and I have tricot 108″ low-stretch silks, but I trimmed them down to 90″.

It’s too bad about your mother’s view on pole because that is a much more user friendly way to get in to aerials if you’re going it on your own.

Bottom line, find a studio or a teacher who can help you get started.

Silks is definitely one that you should not self teach. It isn’t just the height, there’s a real chance of getting tangled. Even four feet off the ground, being tangled and trying to figure out to untie yourself is exhausting.

Lyra is one that I think can be self taught.

Hi, it’s good to hear you are planning to take up aerial silks, however I concur with everyone that it’s best to get a personal instruction to learn aerial silks.

Yes, learning every aerial stuff like pole, lyra, etc. needs safety precaution. But, what sets aerial silks apart is one needs to be well versed in how to wrap, how to thread your fabric or legs, etc to do the moves. As one gets more advanced and starting to learn drops, it’s very dangerous if one doesn’t get the correct wrap.

From my own experience, I’m comfortable with learning pole, lyra and even hammock on my own. But when it comes to aerial silks, I still look for instructors to get the proper instruction.

Please let us know how it goes!
