Newbie MOTM Aug 2010 Challenge
Posted by JBStarryEyedGirl on August 10, 2010 at 1:57 amHey ladies, since this forum seems sadly neglected I’m throwing a topic in here! For anyone dancing 6 months or less (or consider yourself a beginner) my challenge move of the month is the helicopter! Pics to come of my weekly progress!

I’ve been dancing for 2 years, but I really kinda suck….and I’m not sure what the helicopter is (we don’t use "standard" names at my studio…lol). I wanna try!
-
So is the helicopter a high V spin???? Cuz I still can’t do that…..

Here is a video of a helicopter. =)
I’m definitely struggling with this one! -
ook. So it isn’t a spin, just an invert. Ok. I wanna work on it too. I invert, but I always hook my leg. I don’t ever hang there in a V position. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Yay!

I’ve been working on this move for a couple of weeks now. At first I thought I was just not strong enough and then I was working on Veena’s lesson for the tuck invert and realize I have the strength but I just wasn’t tipping back at the top of the tuck. As soon as i tilted my head back my body inverted into position. Now I am just working on holding it with my legs extended. I still have a ways to go to make it look smooth.

Not really sure this is a safe move for those that have only been poling 6 months or less! It is way too easy to tear your rotator cuff or do some serious injury to your back if you do not have proper form inverting and dismounting.
-
It’s commonly referred to as a chopper but I’ve seen it called a helicopter in studios before too.
I struggled with this one for a long time as well. I didn’t have the strength to hold it when I was first attempting it. I stopped trying for several weeks and worked on tucking my knees up to my chest while holding myself up on the pole. Then eventually tipping back. Roxy-Pink taught me that https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif .

I DID it tonight! Gracefully and without jumping or struggling!!! SO excited! The best tip I have is to lean your head back when going up, it really changed my position into inversion easier! I don’t think this move is too advanced, but I’m pretty strong arm wise (I’m a massage therapist https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif so maybe I’m just a tiny bit ahead of the curve https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

we call this the chopper and our helicopter is done on the floor. This is part of our level 2 graduation requirements.

OK girls! Lets take some pics this week of our progress! I have class mon night so I will take some then =)
How often does everyone go to classes? I try to go 3-4 times a week, but my classes are cardio + pole, chairdance + pole, and cardio ballet. I also try to get there early to play, and stay later so I can sometimes get an hour of pole work + a 45 min cardio workout wheew! -
I used to go three times per week, but now it’s only once. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif I’ll try to get pics of my chopper/helicopter/ high V (thats what we call it…high V hold..)

Allrighty ladies! Where are everyones’ video responses for the helicopter/chopper/high V? I finally got around to posting a video! It shows most of the tricks I can do so far!

It’s interesting that on my right arm to the pole invert when I do this on this side my leg always hooks as well until I did it on the opposite side where there was no problem. uh! Just like that on that side.
The correction that I need to do on the right is that I need to throw my head back & arch my back more like I do on the other side. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif
