So bit off topic but I thought id throw this out anyway.
I’ve had a stainless steel bar in my tongue piercing for eleven years. a couple of days ago I decided to ‘graduate’ to a gold plated bar.
After sleeping on it over night my tongue was really sore and puffed up. By the end of the second night it was really swollen, WHITE (eek) and very sore.
I’ve changed it back over to the stainless steel bar so I hope or gets better! Has anyone else experienced this? What are your tips for helping the swelling go down?
I’m using strong antibacterial mouthwash as often as possible.

If indeed it is an allergic reaction you need an antihistamine to counteract the reaction.  Benadryl (diphenhydramine hydrochloride) is going to be the fastest acting but will probably make you drowsy.  I would start with 50 mg to get the swelling down and then 25 mg every 4-6 hours until the reaction is cleared.

Titainium is probably the safest metal for people with nickel allergies. Most metals including stainless steel have trace amounts of nickel. It is an allergy that increases with exposure so once you have it ( as I do) try and avoid anything nickel based. I can't even wear silver or gold earrings!

It may not be a nickle allergy, although that it highliy likely, but some peole are actually allergic to gold.

I have a bunch of cheap silver hoop & stud earrings with six holes on my left ear/one on my right and wear a combo…. if I keep them all in for more than half the day, my holes get a little sore and bleed then the next day there's a dot of crust on some of them so I barely wear stuff in them these days.

I don't know WHAT metal they are because they are from places such as the Dollar Store, Family Dollar, Walmart, etc but they seem to have the same things in common: cute yet ouchy.

I'm now curious about which metal allergy I have exactly. I'll be glad when I find out though because I wouldn't mind going a full day without sore holes. Some of the holes were poked as far back as 1997 so it definitely isn't something new I'm experiencing.

Yep, I would agree.  There was a big stink about cheap jewelry a few years back also containing I think cadmium.  I believe most of it was pulled off the shelves but places like Etc and Claires had a ton of it in their stores.  Most cheap jewelry has a high nickel content.

Yeah, google it.  It was at least 3 years ago.  I know because a lab I do work with got totally slammed with testing jewelry.  The US adopted the EU's RoHS regulations for lots of imports.  Yet another reason I know a *little* about hexavalent chrome…. ((cough cough))
