So, I am brand new to poling and studio veena, and it seems like such a great place full of supportive people https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I am currently just starting to take classes and have ordered my first x-pole to arrive in a few weeks, but I want to do some off the pole training to prepare myself to really be able to accomplish a lot on the pole. I am currently about 10 lbs overweight and am losing about 2 lbs a week eating clean, but I really want to start training my body with weights and cardio exercise that will help me with poling. I have a pretty weak upper body, but a strong lower body due to dance.

What are some specific exercises/muscle groups/goals I can work on in the gym to help me improve on the pole? Anyone have any advice?

    Thanks!!

    Welcome!

It's wise of you to think about doing strenghtening exercises off the pole. If I had known how heavy pole work is before I started I would actually have gone for a couple of months in the gym first. But I was really weak at that time and at the studio they started off with a lot of spins (I loved them but my body wasn't ready for the weight bearing which makes me understand Veenas teaching concept)…

I would say focus on the forearms (I can recommend wrist rolls with handles for that), upper back (delts and lats), shoulders and abs. If you are a beginner in the gym I would recommend you to try around with different machines, that will give you a good variation!

Thanks for the advice! I am not sure why, but I never even thought about forearm and wrist strengthening. Thanks a lot. I am going to spend the time I have to wait for my pole to arrive training hard at the gym and at home to build strength. It should make learning a lot easier!!

You're smart for wanting to build strength!! If you're looking for things you can do at home with or without the pole, check out the lessons here if you can. I start you off with strength work first, and in addition to that, there's a section for pole conditioning exercises.https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

You're welcome! Pole works the forearms really hard so they have to become strong! These were the ones which first became a problem for me but I solved it pretty quickly with the curl-exercises.

    More muscles=better poling!
