  • Out of a spinning Marley?

Posted by chumpchkin on July 6, 2011 at 4:52 pm

So I've been working on getting into a Marley (or a Goddess, where your lower leg is just braced against the pole and the feet are crossed, you don't actually grab the lower foot) from standing on a spinning pole. I just hook my knee from standing and then fall into it…but the problem is, I can't figure out a graceful way out of it! I can certainly just flop to the floor and roll away, but it doesn't look cute. I'd love to figure out a way back onto the pole, but i feel like I'm too close to the floor. Or does anyone know a way?

Is this what you are doing?

Yes, good catch! But I watched that video (it's just at the beginning, right?) and it doesn't show how she gets out of it. So I'm still stumped.

I've only done this one on static, but I was taught to hold on to the pole with my higher hand (the one on the same side of the body as my hooked leg), loosen the grip on the hooked leg, and sort of slide to the ground as I spin.  I really don't like doing it because my hooked leg tends to stick to the pole and I don't slide smoothly down, plus it hurts (and the friction between my skin and the pole makes a loud and unpleasant noise).  Maybe if you're really stuck to the pole and it's on spin (and you're holding on to the pole with your high inside hand) you could pull yourself upright and loosen your leg grip and either continue to climb up the pole or just drop down onto your feet?  But like I said I haven't tried that myself yet…

By the way, if you have Veena's lessons, I think she calls this one the Side Spin (it's in the Intermediate section)…but she also does it on static.

I do the falling marley (on spin) in my midwest pole comp submission vid. I do it around 2:45 – And I move into an inverted thigh hold to scorpio. I hope that helped, and that this is the move you were talking about!

PERFECT, PoleFitMom. That's exactly what I was looking for. Also, I can't believe I didn't remember that, since I watched your video twice when you originally put it up!

This is something Ihave been working on and  there are a couple ways I have worked on getting out of it.  Here are some of the combos I have come up with. Some of them I haven't tried yet due to lack of pole height but in theory they would work. Wish I was near a pole right now, so I could check em out.

Marley > Flatline Gemini > Holly Drop

    Marley > Apprentice > Superman

Marley > ITH > Scorpio or Gemini

    Marley > ITH > Butterfly

you can also just reach up with your top hand, bend at the waist and knees, and go into a bomb and then into whatever invert you like =) i like going into a bomb from a back hook as well, on static or spin mode!

What does a bomb look like?  Is it like a hip hold with the legs bent?

Amy, that sounds awesome. Do you by any chance have a video of it?

yup! a bomb is a hip hold tuck.

um…. i dont have any vids of exactly that, but you can see the idea with this- @ about :47, there's a transition from a back hook into an inside leg hang.

Amy, your link didn't come through (could you try it again?) but I did attempt it in my new video that I just posted. I was using my hands, but hopefully I can phase that out! It's a super cool transition though, and really fun to do, so thank you so much!
