I'm curious to know how you all picked your song for showcases/performances/etc?

What made you go "I MUST do this song!" or "THIS IS IT!"?
How did you know IT was THE ONE?

And after listening to it 1000 times, have you ever had second thoughts?
Heck, changed it completely to another song?

My reason for asking is cause I'm set to perform this January in our studio's 1st ever show. I really want to prove I'm awesome as i think i am against all these other ridiculously amazing show ponies. We get to pick whatever song we like which is awesome. But I'm having a tough time STICKING with one song. I've been listening to everything i have and i keep falling in and out of love with songs. I go from "ooooo this would be cool." to "does it really FIT me?".

Like i wanted to do 'Rev22:20" by Puscifier and was set on doing it…..like power envisions and costumes floating through my head like mad. But then i got second thoughts. I love the darkness of the song but I feel I'm not really "Alethea" sexy to pull it off. I'm lyrical. I'm dancer. Its hard to find a song to really bring that out but still be bad ass. I have such an array of music, from Josh Groban to As I Lay Dying, cause my music reflex my mood and that changes constantly. So everytime i think i have THE ONE, the next day it can just as easily go away. Ahhh. I am so damn particular!

    Thoughts?

Oh wow, I don't think I've ever really had this problem quite as badly as you…. I mean I've thought about songs that I could dance to, and invision myself doing certain moves to a certain part of the song and build from there…  Then maybe 3 weeks down the road I'll hear another song which is super fantastic and start invisioning myself doing certain moves to certain parts of the song…  I don't think it's like instant "change my mind!" the next day thing.

I think one of the main thing for me is listening to songs that'll match my dance style.  If I wanted to do sexy Alethea style, I'd pick a song which best suits a bunch of moves (on pole and floorwork) that I'm capable of doing which would be considered sexy.  I find certain songs go best with graceful spinny moves, then there are certain songs that I find goes best with "OMG LOOK HOW I'M ROCKING THIS STRENGTH MOVE…. YEAAAAH!".

I think for you, you should figure out what kind of "style" you'd like to do for your showcase and pick a song that would best represent those kinds of moves/floorwork.  That way, if you decide to do another song, perhaps it'll be the kind of music that'll still match your style of dance. I hope this helps a little!

Basically what I will do is just sit down one day and go through my ipod and whittle my songs down to a few.  There are sonfgs that I would like to dance to and then there are songs that totally speak to me at that point in my life.  After I get about a half dozen songs I will put those on a playlist and pretty much listen to that exclusively for a day or two.  One song will stand out from the rest and that is it.

It sounds to me like you just have not found THE song.

I like to settle on a genre first that fits my dance style, and then I look for one that works with the theme I'm trying to convey.

I'll help you look for music later! You're my favouritest show pony. :3

I always end up choosing a handful of songs, all of which I like, and then creating a play list and listening to them. I never usually choose a song from the playlist until I have had a chance to actually dance to it. You don't even need a pole for this. Just put on some music and see how you feel moving to it. Often I find that songs that I really like do not make for great performance music, so I always try to choose something that is interesting to listen to, with many possibilities for 'hits', embellishments, and tempo changes. For example, I tend to like triphop a lot, but there are a lot of great triphop songs that aren't great performance songs, because they tend towards having a lot of uniformity of sound, repeats, very few tempo changes if any, and often are quite long.

My reality is that once I choose music, I stick with it. When practicing, you are going to hear that song a lot and even songs that I have LOVED do not stand up to how much I need to listen to something before I perform to it. However, I know it backwards and forwards and that is main goal. Since this is the first performance of many (if you want it to be) don't worry about  the absolutely most perfect song ever choosing you, just find something you like a lot, make the decision, and see where it takes you! Have fun!

I can pretty much tell you every little nuance of Stranglehold.  This is also really good when you screw up, because you will screw up, to get you back to your routine at the proper time.
